Need help with a trip to gulf coast

Wife and I are driving from Wisconsin to Memphis, then NOLA early Nov. After leaving New Orleans we want to continue on to the Mississippi gulf coast. We are looking for a place to hole up in for a few days that would be friendly and laid back, on/near the beach and close to good food, cold beer, and some music at night. All I can find is casinos, Courtyards, Hampton Inns, etc. I can get those anywhere, where do we go to kick back and enjoy the area and the people?

Thanks!

Try the Gulf Shores area...we stayed there for a week but in a timeshare rental and not a hotel or motel. You shouldn't have trouble finding a nice property since they have been rebuilding after Katrina hit so many new places in the last 5 years.

Several times we've started in NOLA then driven along the coast and also drive to FL to see our daughter, and I always want to come along that area on the way back to KS or we come back up and spend a night or two in Tunica.

Anyway hope you have a great trip since the term "Southern Hospitality" is true :)

ocean springs is historical, "artsy" and comfy. lots of southern hospitality. some B&Bs also.

normally i'd say Dauphin Island, AL is ideal. very relaxing, low key beach town, natural, biking, birding, beer& sand... BUT if you are going anytime soon, they are not completely cleaned up from the oil spill. people are havng pleasant visits, but they have not progressed as Gulf Shores/OB have.

Do a bit of research on those areas, and if DI appeals to you, there is a forum over on AL that has some posters with current info & conditions.

Welcome down here!
