One week in Montana - 4th of July

We are planning a trip to MT for the week of July 4, 2012. We've been to Missoula and Glacier and loved it but want to see more of the state. Where is a good place to visit and see a good small town 4th of July celebration. If you had one week to see things in MT where would you go?

Now's a good time to look at some of the town calendars for this year. Generally the same festivals and rodeos happen every year.

Check Butte, White Sulphur Springs, Livingston, Philipsburg, Ennis and so on to find a good celebration. Check the online Bozeman Daily Chronicle, Great Falls Tribune, Billings Gazette, Butte Observer, and Missoulian for information.

Hello. Ennis Montana is a great place to visit and stay over the 4th. The day of the 4th you could start the morning off with a pancake breakfast at the fire hall (6-10am), then watch the parade at 10:00 am, then enjoy the car show and shops and such, eat luch at the Lions Club BBQ from 11:00 - 2:00pm, then go to rodeo at 2pm. Then you could make your way over the Virginia City hill to Virginia City and Nevada City and check out the history. Stay until dark and watch the fire works. Ennis teams with Virginia City on the fire works. You could also fish at the Ennis Lake or the Madison River. Lots of stuff to do. Don't forget to book early as it is the busiest weekend of the year. Have a great time!!!! Mary

You could go to Red Lodge. They host the Home of the Champions rodeo on July 2, 3 & 4 and there is a parade in the morning before the rodeo. There are lots of interesting shops and a great candy store, and several good places to eat. While there, you would want to take a drive over the Beartooth Highway, which has breathtaking views. If you drive over the entire highway, you will end up at Cooke City, a small mountain town at the northeast entrance to Yellowstone Park. You could then drive back through Red Lodge and take the back road through Roscoe, Absarokee and Columbus and get onto I-90 westbound, where you could continue to Bozeman and see the Museum of the Rockies. From there, it's just a few hours' drive through Ennis, Virginia City & Nevada City (the last two are old gold-mining towns). Lewis & Clark Caverns is near Cardwell which is also in that area. This is a cave with lots of colorful formations. Butte is an interesting town also, because of its history. You'd probably want to spend 2 days in the Red Lodge area, one day in Bozeman, and one or two days in the Ennis-Virginia City area depending on whether you just want to see the sights or stop and fish, etc. So there's about a week.

Anywhere in North Central Montana-

Conrad Whoop up Days, http://russell.visitmt.com/listings/11151.htm

Great Falls for a bang up 4th of July with fireworks either on the 3rd or 4th all over town including fireworks at the stadium for thehometown Pioneer league baseball team-farm team for Chicago White Sox. Great Falls Voyagers. Beautiful parks to picnic- Giant Springs STate Park, Gibson Park with pond, swans and geese. Great Falls sub-community - Black Eagle- has their own little parade and community picnic as well. Farmers market is alive that week as well as a evening concert at the Bandshell - Sousa lovers unite! Great Falls is a very patriotic town.. home to military Air Force base, as well as the State militia Air Guard. If you like a little home town Patriotism.. Great Falls and surrounding communities have wonderful 4th of July celebrations..
