Here's a map and list of scenic drives that may be of help to you in your planning: http://visitmt.com/listing/categories_NET/PrimaryResults.aspx?Title=Scenic+Drives+and+Tours&SiteId=32&SiteTypes=Scenic+Highway
From Great Falls you can go over Kings Hill at Neihart on US 89.
At the junction with US 12, you can go east to Harlotown ("Harlo" in local parlance) and down to Big Timber on the east side of the Crazy Mtns. or west to White Sulphur and down to Livingston on the west side of the Crazies. They're both pretty.
These are major roads used every day, and I would say only 1 in a thousand tourists (probably far fewer) ever see them.
From Big Timber or Livingston, go east on I-90 to Columbus, then out to Red Lodge via Absarokee. Stop at the Grizzly Bar in Fishtail if you want to see where local people go. That is an area where many state residents have vacation homes.
Edited: 11 years agoAgreed. Great route!!!
Thank you for the Columbus via advise
hey ainwa!
Do you mean the Grizzly Bar in Roscoe? Or Cowboy Bar in Fishtail?
Too many old bars to keep them all straight!
