Itinerary query - getting to Rio

I am an itinerary planner !! I enjoy the researching and planning but sometimes think i am unrealistic and need advice on wether its do-able or not....

We will arrive at the airport @ 2pm (from UK) We have a car to collect and I know we can check in for MGM at the airport (does this save time?)... As long as no flight delays etc, the idea in mind is to be ready to go "out" at 5pm. (en route to hotel, would like to stop at the vegas sign depending on time?)

Next 'plan' or idea (and query) is that I want to go to Rio on this night (we arrive on a saturday & I have got this thing abt seeing masquerade in sky show so this is only night we can do it). If we leave at 5pm - best option for getting to Rio? Monorail to Harrahs and free shuttle to Rios? OR, take the car? (and prob leave it there as we will be drinking), Or get a taxi? Will the strip traffic be busy at this time ( therefore leave the car taxi idea?).... As long as we are in Voodoo Lounge in Rio before sunset, thats fine....

Hoping to see the masquerade free show at 7pm (after sunset) and then get free shuttle back to Harrahs... The rest of eve I am still planning, but I am assuming we will be back on the strip by 8pm??... Maybe food at Carnaval court ( unless we have eaten a snack before?!)

I cannot figure out how jet lagged we might be, but I am hoping to explore some of the strip area near Harrahs? Maybe walk towards Venetian ( was thinking about TAO but may be too tired for clubbing) so perhaps look at Sirens show at TI, the volcano at Mirage, the fountains at Bellagio... And Maybe back to Marquee at Cosmo ( tho not big clubbers....)

Ok- the evening bit is still being planned- but does this itinerary sound Ok up to the shuttle back to Harrahs bit?! Whats best way to get to Rio? And any advice on how to do it different? ... Probably need to make it an earlyish night, but this may or may not happen....

All opinions welcome and thanks in advance! Ps - wats the cost of the monorail ??!!

Thanks

First of all, you will be better off posting this in the Las Vegas forum rather than the general Nevada forum as more people will see it there.

If you plan on drinking, then driving to Rio is not worth it. I also would not recommend the monorail - not worth the price & the stations are way in the back of the hotels. By the time you walk to/from each monorail station, you could have walked halfway from MGM to Harrah's by then.

I suggest you use the SDX, Deuce, and WAX buses instead of the monorail. The Deuce and SDX run up and down the strip. The WAX is a good route from your location to Fremont street. For your Rio trip, hop on the Deuce ($7 for a 24 hour pass) to either Harrah's and use their shuttle to Rio or take the Deuce to Bally's or Flamingo, then get on the 202 (your 24 hour pass will be valid on this bus as well) to the Rio. With the bus pass, you can use the Deuce or SDX to go up/down the strip and back to the MGM at the end of the night - saving alot of walking.

A couple of maps for you to get your bearings.
