Jackson or Lincoln

We are touring New England Sept/Oct, we have our route planned for most of the way. From this site Jackson and Lincoln are mentioned as nice places to stop.

We will be travelling from Bar Harbor Maine and want to spend 3 nights in New Hampshire. We are then booked in Woodstock Vermont.

Any ideas please on where to head to from Bar Harbor on route to Woodstock. We want to do the following :-

1 )cog railway.

2) Drive the Kancamagus byway.

3) If possible see some Moose and or Bears.

Thanks for any help

We recently stayed in Lincoln and loved it!!! There are several nice places to stay depending on what you want. We stayed at a cabin at the Country Bumpkins campground. Very cute cabins....not fancy but very clean and comfortable. The Kancamagus byway is awesome. We traveled it on Motorcycle five times and loved each and every time. If you drive the Kanc, make a stop at Sabaday Falls. It is a short hike up to a beautiful falls...well worth it. And by short hike I think it is less than 1/2 mile. Also if you enjoy hiking and enjoying nature The Lost River is amazing. It is mostly boardwalk so it is easy going. In the next town over (North Woodstock)there a business(cant think of the name...sorry)that has moose expeditions. We went on it and saw 2 sets of Mom and baby's and one big male. Basically you travel in a bus and they shine a spotlight along the side of the road and stop when they spot some. You can snap a few pictures but you really have to be quick about it.

The attractions in that area open between 9 and 10 am and close 4 - 5 pm so plan accordingly. Also restaurants serve dinner between 5 and 9. Nothing is open after that....we found out the hard way.....lol

I prefer Jackson. You can always cross the "Kanc" over to Lincoln. The road is about 32 miles.

I also prefer Jackson. It really gives you the village feel. You have to pass through the covered bridge to enter the village it just has that New Hampshire cozy feel to it. Lincoln is a great town that you can check out as you drive the Kanc down from Jackson towards Woodstock.

Agreed that Jackson has a more "New England" feel - lots of great restaurants and close to shopping.

Kanc is good for a day trip to Lincoln (check out the Woodstock Station for lunch or dinner), or as mentioned on your way to VT.

If you haven't been to the White Mountains though, you should definitely try to schedule a stop at the Mt. Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods (Rte. 302). Beautiful old hotel and great views - and lots of moose if you time it right!
