Short excursions from Hanover

We will be in Hanover visiting family. We would like to take some short trips..a couple of days here and there..using Hanover as our jumping off point. We are an active couple in our 60's. We love beautiful scenery, short hikes, quaint towns, maybe seeing some nature/wildlife. We have never been to this area before. We would appreciate your input...please and thank you.

What time of year do you plan to visit? Several hiking day trips near Hanover. For 2-3 days further afield, maybe Stowe/Burlington (VT), Portsmouth/Portland/Maine coast, Northeast Kingdom (VT)/southern Quebec. Just a few initial thoughts.

Just over the river in Vermont, you could visit quechee gorge, Simon Pearce glass, VINS nature center, and king Arthur flour.

Oh, another nice trip could be to follow the river south. Stop at LA Burdick in Walpole.

The Valley News is the local newspaper; you'll find their events calendar at http://calendar.vnews.com/

Closer to Hanover you'll find farmers' markets, berry picking, the Hood Museum on the Dartmouth campus, AVA Gallery in Lebanon, picnic on Balch Hill (Hanover), hike Moose Mountain, Mount Cardigan, Mount Cube or parts of the Appalachian Trail. Summer theater in New London, entertainment at the Hopkins Center at Dartmouth, including a free concert on the Dartmouth Green on June 26th. The Billings Farm and a stroll around Woodstock, VT. A day trip to the Shelburne Museum (Vermont). Rent canoes or kayaks at the Ledyard Canoe Club on the Connecticut River in Hanover.
