Things to do near New Brunswick

We are staying in Somerset for three nights to watch our granddaughter play volleyball at Rutgers University. We have one free day. We will have our car and love history.....any suggestions would be appreciated. We had originally thought we would go to NYC, but that seems like too much for one day. Would Philidelphia be an option...thanks.

Either NYC or Philadelphia are doable for a day trip. If you have never been to NYC, then I would recommend that you do that. You can go in by train or bus from New Brunswick. Check out www.njtransit.com for schedule.

There are also many interesting historical places to visit in New Jersey. For example, You will be very near Princeton which is an old, interesting town. It is the home of Princeton University which has a beautiful campus, Revolutionary War Battlefield and Art Museum. After visiting there you could drive over to the Delaware River to Washington Crossing and Flemington and New Hope, PA....a very nice area on the river.....

Another area to visit is the Shore. Many of the small towns along the Monmouth County Shoreline are historical. Ocean Grove being a Camp Meeting Ground is filled with "gingerbread" houses and a Great Auditorium...is just one example.

Lots of great places for you to research and consider.

You can easily do a day trip to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island from Liberty State Park in Jersey City.

There's an art museum in New Brunswick. There is the something Lowe house on River Road in Piscataway near CO Johnson park but that historic tour takes less than 1 hour. You can go to Princeton & meander about. History abounds along the old Morris Canal & loch system but it's more of a nature tour than a history tour. Duke Gardens are in Somerset.

If you want to go to either Philly or NYC, I agree that the train would be your best bet.
