Best Ticket to get for Public Transport

Hi

We are staying in Newark Hilton Penn and will be wanting to travel to NYC for sightseeing for 3 days, using the PATH and NYC subway systems. There will be myself, my husband and our two teenage sons (15 & 18).

Is there one ticket we can purchase that will cover both? I was looking at the "7-day Unlimited" for the subway, but on PATH website it states, "The MTA recently changed their policy to allow MetroCards to hold both Unlimited Passes and Pay-Per-Ride values on the same card."

Sorry if this sounds a daft question, but does this mean the "Metrocard 7-day Unlimited" is accepted on PATH? If not, what would be the best ticket option for us?

In addition, can the Metrocard 7-day Unlimited be purchased at Newark Penn Station?

Would appreciated it if someone could clarify this for me.

Hmmm. What the MTA website says about this is unclear to me, and I take the PATH and subway regularly. I think it is saying that an unlimited ride MetroCard will not work on the PATH unless you also charge it up with some additional $ for pay per ride, which the turnstiles at the PATH stations would recognise. I haven't used an unlimited ride card for a long time, so maybe someone else can chime in here and share their experiences.

NewJerseyCyclist...thank you very much!

So it isn't just me who finds it unclear. I also asked on the NYC forum and so far the suggestion is what you suspect of paying additional fares to the unlimited metrocard. Can the 7-day unlimited metrocard plus placing the extra fares be purchased at Newark Penn Station? Or would it be financially better to purchase a separate PATH tickets for 6 trips total:

Day 1 (THURSDAY) - Newark PATH to WTC PATH & return PATH Christopher St to Newark,

Day 2 (FRIDAY) - Newark PATH to EXCHANGE PLACE (if Liberty Island is opened for July) or again WTC PATH & return PATH 33rd St to Journal Square and change for Newark.

Day 3 (SATURDAY) - Newark PATH to WTC & return WTC to Newark.

Also, do we need to get back to Newark by a certain time in the evenings?

The MTA recently changed their policy to allow MetroCards to hold both Unlimited Passes and Pay-Per-Ride values on the same card.

Time (Unlimited account) on your MetroCard will always be used first.

(In the case of Path, if the Metrocard has value (pay-per-ride) then the card can be used on Path.

If you are using the unlimited card then each person must have their own card - so if it is for 3 days it may not be worth it. depoends on how many subway fares you will be paying.

Multiple people can use (4 people) the pay-per-ride. Alos for anything over $5 you get a bonus of 5% added to the card.

Each new card costs $1.

Here is a chart that may help to decide: http://www.mta.info/metrocard/compare.htm

Path runs all night just longer times between the trains and depending on time may require a longer ride.

Here is a link to schedules: www.panynj.gov/path/maps-schedules.html

Note that some lines don't run late at night so may ad time to your travel.

Day one is fine except that on returning you will need to change trains in Journal Sqaure to the Newark train.

Day 2: Statue of Liberty is scheduled to reopen on July 4. Don't believe that tickets are being sold yet but if you want to go there I would reserve as soon as available. Then as you probably know if you go to the SOL from NJ, when done you can go to NYC (via ferry) instead of returning to NJ.

returning on Path - if not returning from WTC then you will need to change trains to get to Newark so it may be worthwhile to go to WTC and catch PATH.

Day 3: Return trip may be longer from 33rd st. See schedules.

Hi njslim

How kind of you.

Yes, I forgot to put in the change of Journal Square for day 1. However, I do have a question regarding these changes...are they classed as 2 trips or will it be one fare?

I don't think we will be getting the unlimited Metrocard after all, as we won't be using the subway enough times to make it pay. There will be 4 of us though. However, it would be good if we can use a card for both to save messing about with booths and money.

So have I got this right, with the Pay-Per-Ride Metrocard, I can place the total amount for all the trips (PATH & Subway) on it. I'm thrown somewhat with the statement, "Multiple people can use (4 people) the pay-per-ride". Does this mean I can buy just one card for all of us?

Thank you very much! Goodness me, AERULES, I'll be up all night looking at all those links, ha-ha!

We will certainly consider doing something in New Jersey.

Yes you can use the pay-per-ride Metrocard for PATH and the NYC subway.

Since you will be loading the card with an amount over $5 you will get a 5% bounus.

In other words, if you put $20 on the card you will end up with $21 on the card.

Yes, all 4 of you can use the same card. Just swipe and one goes thru, swipe again and the next goes through , etc.

Changing trains at Journal Square is all one fare.

Lovely, thanks for that njslim! Will definitely go with the pay per ride Metrocard. Just thought I'd check on the changing of trains...didn't want to be caught out unexpectedly.

Thanks again!

Just want to clarify something about the 4 person "limit" in the MTA cards. You can get any number of people in on a pay per ride card, you can get 10 in if you want -- but only 4 will be "remembered" for purposes of transferring. In other words, if the 4 of you all take the subway and then transfer to a bus you'll all transfer for free. And vice-versa
