New Mexico itinerary

Looking for some guidance. We are a family of 4 (with 2 high school aged teens) thinking about a trip to NM during spring break. We have tickets to fly in and and out of Albuquerque (March 25-30).

We definitely want to visit Carlsbad caverns as well as Santa Fe.

Can you suggest an 5 night, 6 day itinerary? We are nature loving and into photography, Not really interested in touristy places or museums. We want to get see some beautiful landscapes and visit places to take great pics.

Thanks in advance.

I found this....The one week itinerary focuses on the North end, however, it looks like the north, will still be quite cool at the end of March.

Would the southern part be better to visit given the weather?

2. Re: New Mexico itinerary

Really not enough time to do Northern NM and Carlsbad in 5 days without spending lots of time in the car. Also watch the weather, snow can happen and I would not want to be traveling outside of the metro areas. Southern NM will be warmer, but can also get snow at higher elevations. If you choose the southern route...

Day 1 arrive Abq. Visit Old Town area, Petroglyph Nat Mon, Sandia Tram

Day 2 Drive to Alamogordo to see White Sands Nat Mon. Along the way make a stop at Bosque del Apache Wildlife Refuge, there probably will still be some birds/wildlife visible. Dine at the mini town of San Antonio at the Buckhorn or Owl Cafe and have a green chile cheeseburger. Also Valley of Fires State Park is along the way. Stay in Alamogordo. Buy a sled to "sled" the dunes!

Day 3 Drive to Carlsbad (3 hours) Do the Natural Entrance into the caverns and the Big Room. If you have time, then Kings Palace tour. Stay in Carlsbad (not White's City)

Day 4 Maybe another 1/2 day at caverns. Then head to Guadalupe Mtns Nat Park south of Carlsbad and loop over to El Paso and to Las Cruces for the night. (do not go into Juarez Mexico) Stay near Mesilla dine at Double Eagle/Peppers or at La Posta. See the historic plaza area.

Day 5 Head back to Abq to visit Old Town area etc that you did not see before.

Day 6 Depart

Thanks for the reply. We finalized our flight info last night.

We will arrive around noon on Sunday and our return flight is early in the morning the following Sunday, so one full week (7 nights and 6.5 days)

We don't mind driving. Our plan was to wake up early in the morning to drive to the next destination.

I have a geeky hubby, so he wants to see the trinity site, Roswell, the spaceport/radio telescope and also the nuclear museum.

Trinity Site is only open 2 days a year, and this spring is April 6. Roswell alien museum will take about 1 hour or less to see and not much else to do in the area. The Very Large Array is west of Socorro and is open daily and well worth a visit.

CasaAzul,

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate the feedback!

We are thinking of driving to Santa Fe since we have 7 nights on the trip.

Sunday - arrive in ABQ on Sunday around noon. We will tour the area (nuclear museum is on the list), and then drive to Santa Fe for the night.

Monday – Santa Fe / Taos / Los Alamos

Tuesday – Santa Fe

Wednesday morning - we will leave early in the morning to start our drive to Carlsbad, via Roswell, stopping on the way , arriving in the evening.

Thursday - day in Carlsbad, spend the night in Alamorgodo

Friday – start the drive back to ABQ, not sure where to spend the night?? - my husband wants to go to the spaceport.

Saturday – Visit things we did not see in ABQ, night in ABQ

Also - why do you suggest not going to Juarez Mexico?

Given our interest in photography and all things geeky (Roswell, the nuclear museum. Spaceport, etc.), can you suggest places that we do not want to miss? Also, we are interested in unique places to photograph. I read on another post that there were some slot canyons (Tent rocks?)

Thanks!

6. Re: New Mexico itinerary

Juarez is one of the most dangerous places in the world right now due to drug cartel violence.

I would look at visiting Very Large Array west of Socorro, Tent Rocks near Santa Fe has great rock formations and a slot canyon to hike up. El Malpais Nat Mon is west of Abq.

Check out www.newmexico.org for other places to visit.

Concerning Ciudad Juarez, I totally agree with CasaAzul. I have studied Anthropology of Mexico in university and have studied a lot about Ciudad Juarez. There are so many murders. I don't have words to describe how dangerous it is. All that is going on there is really terrible. Don't go there!

Seconding CasaAzul on the VLA (Very Large Array) Radio Telescope. Geek swoon. Very dramatic, we got great pics. This is one of the radio telescopes in the movie Contact. Re: your day where you are showing Taos, Los Alamos--Los Alamos museum can easily consume several hours and that day looks way too long. If it was me, I would replace Taos with Bandelier Nat Mon which is closer and a nice contrast with your technology sites.

Thanks for the replies. We are our trip now. We are in Roswell now, heading towards Santa Fe. We did not visit Mexico! We stayed in las cruces.

We did go see the very large array.. Got some cool sunset pics. We have visited quite a bit...the bosque bird refuge, spaceport, an old mining town near demming, bought some chilies in hatch, Messila , white sands national monument, Carlsbad caverns, and now Roswell.

We even saw a heard of wild oryx running on a plane on the way to the spaceport! Very cool!

Bandelier Nat Mon looks like a great suggestion. Where can we go to see some wildlife? We are heading towards Santa Fe now. We went to valley of fires & the petroglyphs near 3 rivers & saw some lizards, bunnies & chipmunks.
