When is the cheapest time to fly to New York?

I need to jump on a flight to pick something up from New York, have an overnight stay and come back - is there a cheap time to do this? A certain day of the week or time of the year?

I don't think time of year will make as much difference to a destination like NYC as will day of week. Ultimately, the key to getting a cheap fare is flexibility to fly not only during a particular time of year or day of week, but on short notice as well. (Judging from the tone of your post, it appears you have that.) But as a general statement, you'll probably do best flying in Friday or Saturday and returning Sunday.

Try Travelocity's UK site and indicate flexible dates when you submit your query. It will return a matrix yielding some substantial price differentials available just by shifting your itinerary a few days in either direction. (Right now, I'm seeing fares for next weekend of £230 from LGW-JFK.) And you can also use their farewatcher to alert you when something cheap comes up.
