Fall foliage trips from NYC into New York State

Looking for help. I am travelling with wife and 2 children to either the Catskills or Adirondacks for a weekend fall foliage experience. The kids are 5 and 6 yrs old. Some hiking and possible biking is of interest.

Can anyone suggest where to go? what time of Sept or Oct is usually peak for this time of year?

Your options are unlimited and it depends on how far north you want to go. Peak foliage is probably in late Sept. to Mid Oct. depending on how far north you are but here are some ideas.

Weekend of Sept. 19 in Lake George is the Adirondack Balloon Festival and Great Escape Amusement Park may still be open and other nice attractions in the area. A few hours north is Ausable Chasm which is well worth the trip. Foliage may not yet be peak then but you can check.
