Letchworth State Park - best entrance?

Hello,

we are going to go to Letchworth State Park in August and we are wondering which might be the best entrance. As far as I can see there are three main entrances but I hardly find a good map of the park.

What would you recommand? Where is the best stop to see middle and lower falls? Where are easy but beautiful hikes?

I am looking forward to your recommandation. Thank you in advance!

Greetings from Austria

It's been awhile since I have been there but I recall taking I-17 to the Hornell exit. Then drive north about 45 minutes and you are at the entrance to Letchworth State Park. Just continue straight and you will pass the waterfalls and if you keep on going you will be able to exit the park.

I believe if you keep on going straight you will end up on I-90. If you go east towards Syracuse you can check out the casinos in Onieda and Chittenango Falls State Park. If you go west you can go to LilyDale (you can see my review if it is the type place you like) and Chautauqua Institution (www.ciweb.org) or Niagara Falls.

Ithaca to the east is also nice.

Have a nice trip.

I believe that there are actually four entrances into the main park; which one you pick depends on where/which direction you are coming from.

The southernmost entrance (the one referenced by thw previous poster) will put you closest to the upper and middle falls; which are at that end of the park. A few miles further on is the turnoff for the lower falls. If you drive the length of the park north/south it is 17 miles. The Mt. Morris Dam is at the northern end. Along the way there are many pull-offs to enjoy the views. Be sure to stop at Inspiration Point and Wolf Creek.

You will have to take a short hike to see the lower falls (there are about 100 steps to descend/ascend at one point). Well worth the effort!

You can stay/eat at the Glen Iris Inn. It is located across from Middle Falls.
