Road trip New York-Niagara Falls-Washington-Atlantic City

Hi

We are 4 adults which are planning a road trip. We'll arrive 30 of June and leave again on the 19 of July - leaving us with 19 full days.

Our preliminary schedule can be seen below. We are going to rent a car when we leave New York. Comments on the itinerary would be appreciated. Is the allocation of days reasonably ? Any ideas to scenery, countryside worth visiting from New York to Niagara Falls and again from Niagara Falls to Washington? Other comments would be appreciated as well?

New York City from 30/6 to 5/7

- 6 Days Sightseeing

Travel from New York City to Niagara Falls from 6/7-7/7

- Any suggestions to scenery, countryside worth visiting along the way?

Niagara Falls from 8/7 -9/7

- See Waterfall, hiking etc.

Travel from Niagara Falls to Washington City on 10/7

- Long driving day. (is it worth stopping somewhere along the way and spending an extra day?)

Washington City from 11/7 - 14/7

- 4 days Sightseeing

Travel from Washington to Atlantic City on 15/7

- Drive and relax at beach in Atlantic City

Atlantic City from 16/7 - 18/7

- Explore Atlantic City and relax at beach

Fly home from New Ark on 19/7

Niagara Falls to Washington is imo too far to drive in one day. I would repost on the NYC forum (this is NY state) and I would also post on the road trip forum.

There are so many options and it largely depends on your interests and how many other attractions you are willing to go to. Here is what I recommend to give you sightseeing opportunities.

6/30 to 7/5 - NYC attractions. I recommend you get a 1 week subscription to www.clubfrreetime.com where you can see a list of free NYC attractions and reduced tickets to shows are sometimes offered to Club Free Time members. www..holeomatic.com describes a show I think is great.

7/6 - Drive to Hornell, NY stopping in Woodbury Commons or West Point or Storm Kings Arts Center or Watkins Glen State Park.

7/7 - Stop in Letchworth State Park on the way to Niagara Falls.

7/8 - 7/9 Niagara Falls. I think 1 full day in Niagara Falls is enough. You may be interested in spending one day at the Chautauqua Institution (www.ciweb.org) or LilyDale, NY and you can go to tripadvisor and see if that is the kind of place you are interested in. Not far from there in Jamestown, NY is the Lucille Ball Musuem if that interests you.

7/10 - Driving from Niagara Falls to DC in one day is a lot. You can check to see if any of these are areas you'd want to stop and how it fits into the driving. They are all in Pennsylvania.

Gettysburg, Lancaster, Hershey, Pennsylvania Grand Canyon in Wellsboro, or Philadelphia

7/11 - rest of trip intact.

Of course you can reduce time in any area to allow for more of the side trips. You can decide that of course.

Anyway have a great trip and let us know how it goes.

I agree with travelus73, except I like taking route 20 - http://nyroute20.com/ It's parallel and close to I90 (toll road), so you can jump on that at any point. It's scenic and takes you through the small towns. you just have to watch the speed lmit.

On the other hand I like taking different routes when I go to that area. A few weeks ago I went through Elmira, NY for Mark Twain history and continued on route 17 then stopped at a casino much furtther west. I may have another recommendation when I go back in 2 weeks.

If you stop in Chatauqua County, I recommend stopping in Fredonia. I like staying at the Brookside Manor Bed and Breakfast . They have amazing breakfasts and it's close to all the wineries in the area.

For the rest of the journey to D.C., I like the above recommendations, but I will also throw in there the Brandywine region, in particular, Chadds Ford- thebrandywine.com/advertisers/gardens.html

Nywhiz - not sure why this post doesn't pertain to New York State; just because it mentions NYC doesn't mean it pertains entirely to it.

OP: NYC to Niagara Falls: hard to answer re. the beginning of your route without knowing how you are coming upstate (entirely through NY?, through NJ then NY? through NJ/PA/NY?) Anyway, once upsate, Corning Glass Center (in Corning, NY) is a recommended stop. Allegany State Park (near Salamanca, NY) has a couple of serene lakes and great hiking, if that interests you. Nearby Ellicotville is a cute town worth checking out.

Watkins Glen is spectacular and worth checking out but it will take you 20 miles (one way) off the I-86/Rt. 17 route. Letchworth SP is even more spectacular and is a must-see but will take you further off (30 miles one way). If you choose to visit Letchworth (and you should), you could take I-390 and pick up the Thruway in Rochester instead of doubling back.

Happy travels!

For your trip between Niagara Falls and Washington --

I don't know how interested you are in American history, but Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, site of the crucial battle of the Civil War and then Lincoln's speech, is an extraordinarily atmospheric place. You can take tours of the battlefield with a National Parks Service guide who drives you around in your own car. We thought it was outstanding.

We stayed at the Baladerry B&B, also very atmospheric and on the edge of the battlefield but in a semi-rural setting. We very much enjoyed it.

Thanks for the replies - they are all very helpful.

Some further questions:

Ragarding the trip from NYC to Niagara Falls. Is it possible and worth combining some of the options below in 2 days (maybe extend it to 3 days) ? Would some of the sights be redundant and can you recommend some places where it would be practical to sleep ?

- Shopping at Woodbury Shopping Mall

- Visit the Catskill Mountains

- Visit Ithaca and see Cornell University

- Watkins Glen State Park

- Letchworth State Park

If we where to skip Atlantic City, which places can be recommend if you want to stay at the beach and relax for a couple of days ?

Im considering a stop in Pittsburgh when we are travelling from Niagara Falls to Washington. Is it possible to watch a sportsevents like NBA, NFL (or maybe just college football) in Pittsburgh in July ?

Regarding Niagara Falls we are planning to stay on the Canadian side. Can somebody recommend a day tour from Niagara Falls on our second day ? Would love to see some beautiful Canadian Nature/scenery (maybe do a small day hike)

9. Re: Road trip New York-Niagara Falls-Washington-Atlantic City

Hi Jonas,

The choices are endless and largely depend on what interests you. Here are some options.

6/30 to 5/7 - NYC

As far as a beach, you can see about Orchard Beach or Jones Beach. I like the Cloisters Museum and Paley Center and www.menupages.com can give you restaurant ideas. I recommend a 1 week subscription to www.clubfreetime.com to give you ideas of free things to do and sometimes you will get discounts on a show.

5/8 - Drive to Hornell, NY, and get a hotel in that area. It is a good base for going to Letchworth State Park and between Hornell, NY and the entrance to Letchworth, you won't find much if any lodging. On the way you can either stop at Woodbury Commons Outlet Mall, Storm King Arts Center (sculptures), or Corning Glass Center.

5/9 to 5/10- Go to Letchworth State Park and drive to Niagara Falls for 2 nights.

Now you have 3 options.

Option 1

5/11 to 5/12

Chautauqua Institution

LilyDale

Panana Rocks Scenic Park

Jamestown Jammers Minor League baseball

Buffalo Raceway (harness track)

On 5/13, I'd recommend a 1 way flight from Buffalo to DC to cut down on driviing.

Option 2 - 5/11 to 5/13

Drive to Pittsburgh and stay 3 nights. I like the Hampton Inn .

Heinz Museum can take all day

Franklyn Lloyd Wright Falling Waters about 75 minutes away

Pittsburgh Pirates baseball game

other museums in Pittsburgh

30 minutes away is Washington, Pa with The Meadows harness track and an outlet mall

On 51/4, I recommend a 1 way flight to DC to cut down on driving.

Option 3 - If you love history, drive right to Gettysburg, Pa, a fabulous place and spend 2 nights.

Then go to DC

If you have time, I'd stop in Baltimore, MD on the way back from DC. I like the Holiday Inn Downtown where you can walk to Camden Yards and see an Orioles baseball game, and you are near some sports museums. The Harbor is nice and Little Italy is great.

Hope this helps and have a great trip and let us know how it goes.

10. Re: Road trip New York-Niagara Falls-Washington-Atlantic City

Thanks for all the advice - I really appreciate it.

I'm a little in doubt about our plans from Niagara Falls to Washington. We will be spending two days and i don't think it will be worth visiting Pittsburgh because of our limited time.

Gettysburg sounds like an interesting place. Would it be to long a drive from Niagara Falls in one day ? Any other charming towns on the way where we could stay overnight ? Would Pensylvania Grand Canyon be worth a visit ?

Other sights/attractions that i should consider ?

Thanks
