Driving New York to Boston

We are considering taking a New England Cruise out of New York City. When we return, we would like to rent a car and drive to Boston and see the sights there. We've heard horror stories about driving in New York City. My question is, how difficult would be it be to drive from JFK or La Guardia, get out of the city, and drive up to Boston. I think it's about 200 miles give or take but our concern is the difficulty in getting out of the city and on the road. Is there a better option?

Take the Amtrak train to Boston. It's a pleasant trip. You don't need or want a car in Boston (and it's expensive to park one - centrally located hotels don't provide free parking).

If you want to explore regions outside of Boston, you can rent a car in Boston for day trips or for a portion of your time in the Boston area.

I do agree with the other poster that the train would be easier. one thing to note if you do drive - you won't ever be entering Manhattan (which can be the scary part for some drivers) you would just be taking highways from the airport to Boston (so no actual city driving) with a GPS its fairly easy to get going onto the main interstate toward Boston. ALSO as a former resident of Boston - it's not the new yorkers you need to worry about - I think Boston drivers are CRAZIER!!

driving from JFK to boston is practically all interstate highways aside from sitting in traffic on the Van Wyck its smooth sailing (until you hit some more traffic in connecticut)

If you're taking a cruise you wouldn't be leaving NYC from JFK or LaGuardia. You'd be leaving from the cruise terminal. There are three in NY Harbor. Which one will you be arriving at? Are you planning to stay in NY after your cruise, or do you want to go straight to Boston?
