Central Hudson Valley lodging

I will be spending four nights in the Hudson Valley in September. Our most likely range for sightseeing will be Sleep Hollow to the south, and Rhinebeck to the north. The other four nights of our vacation will be in NYC - probably two nights on either end, TBD.

Since there are only 65 miles between our two end points, it might make more sense to pick one fairly central B&B or hotel and do our sightseeing/day trips from there.

With that in mind, what town would you focus on and what lodging has both convenience and charm? Let's say a budget up to 350 a night for a double room although if a charming/pretty place goes for less, I'm more than happy to pay less. I'm envisioning a place with a big porch, screen doors, adirondack chairs, a view would be nice...

I already know about Mohonk Mountain House and that seems out of the way for four days of sightseeing. Although, it sure is beautiful and if the opinion is that sightseeing the stretch I mentioned is not actually all that bad from that location, it's a possibility. I suppose I could even consider something like the first three nights there, visit the northern bits... move to Sleepy Hollow for our last night while doing sightseeing down south for that one day.

Many thanks.
