getting to our hotel...

We will start our trip around America in New York 01/03/2014. We have sorted most things out now and I'm just looking to make it run as smooth as possible by working out how to get to our hotels/hostels.

We arrive at JFK around 4pm and will be staying at the Wolcott hotel on 31st street and it looks extremely complicated to get there! Can anyone help with the easiest way to get to the hotel ( we are trying to keep to a budget ... no limousines please lol)

Any help would be greatly appreciated

First, you've posted on the New York State website so for any future questions post on the NY City site.

It's very easy to get to your hotel. Take the JFK AirTrain monorail from your terminal to Jamaica. There get the Long Island Rail Road to NY Penn Station. You can exit Penn Station at 31st Street and 7th Avenue. Your hotel is on 31st Street between 5th and 6th Avenues, so a fairly short walk.

You buy your AirTrain ticket when you get off in Jamaica and you can buy a combined ticket for both the AirTrain and the Long Island Rail Road. At the time you'll be traveling the combined fare will be $12.00 per person.

What part do you think is complicated? It's very easy. Tak the AirTrain from the airport to Jamaca station ($5 per person). Get the E train towards Manhattan ($2.50 per person or covered on an unlimited Metrocard). Get off at Lexington/53rd Stret station. Transfer to the downtown 6 train (free transfer). Get off at 33rd Street. Walk the three blocks to your hotel.

Auden's directions also work. Mine will be a little cheaper and have a shorter walk on the end. Your call.

Said in other words, this is the New York State forum. You really want the New York City forum.

Public transit is more straightforward than it may seem. Arriving at 4pm means you will have rush hour traffic on the roads, so public transit is better still.

If you decide to go with a taxi anyway, it's a flat rate for the both of you, plus tolls and tip, which will come out to about $70. DO NOT consider any van airiport transport companies. You'll find more discussion about how bad they are on the NYC forum.

And if you want to make your walk even shorter, take the AirTrain to Jamaica, then the E train subway to Kew Gardens. Make a same-platform transfer to the F train and take that to 34th Street and 6th Avenue. Get out at the front end at 32nd Street and 6th Avenue. That's the closest subway to your hotel.

Thanks guys! I just typed in New York and this came up so...

Their website says - Get the JFK air train to Howard Beach Station outside of baggage claim. Take the "A" train to 34th Street Penn Station. Walk east to Broadway turn south (right) to 31st Street. The hotel is located between 5th Ave. and Broadway. This is the long way to get to the hotel, about 2-3 hours.- your directions are these... but clearer! :)

Were from Leeds in England (travel options are car or bus) and its our first in America so any subway directions looks really complex.lol Your help has been great so thank you :)
