Looking for Romantic Getaway suggestions.

Hey all, we've been married 20+ years and need a break from everyday life. Looking for suggestions for a romantic weekend spot, quiet and either very historic and/or with a European flair. Wife needs some pampering and relaxation. We live in the Raleigh-Durham area so pretty much anyplace in NC is a possibility.

Westglow Resort and Spa will make your wife smile. It's not quite 4 hours from Raleigh. Good luck.

Willow Winds has luxury cabins just SE of Asheville, NC. It's about 4 hours from Ralleigh. There's spa packages and fine dining in Asheville. Go to The Admiral for dinner.

Highlands is a bit further SW of Asheville but Old Edwards Inn and Spa is outstanding. Old Edwards is very European. Highlands is a neat town to visit.

Duck, NC is about 3 1/2 hours E of Raleigh and located at the Outer Banks. Sanderling Inn and Spa is outstanding with terrific views of the ocean and good food.

Pittsboro is not far from Raleigh. Fearington House would be a great place to visit for a nice weekend.

Another option is the Lake Lure area.

The Lake Lure Inn & Spa has the feel of an Old World-type mountain lodge. I haven't been there in many years but I understand it was completely renovated and refurbished several years ago. It also offers several bungalows equipped with jacuzzis for a more intimate getaway.

In the same area there's also the Rumbling Bald Resort (formerly Fairfield Mountains Resort), which offers spa services, golf and tennis.

To me the most romantic, historic city close enough to drive for a weekend getaway is Historic Charleston, SC. It's about a 4 hour drive from Raleigh.

My husband and I have spent several anniversary trips there, I never tire of walking around the beautiful historic city, touring homes, museums, etc; taking horse carriage rides, dining at wonderful restaurants and enjoying great shopping, etc. Also love to tour the large plantations just outside town; plus the beach is a short drive, and nice for a beach day. Although it is a city, there are plenty of quiet places/historic streets to walk holding hands, plus waterfront parks with benches to sit and enjoy the view, etc. Very relaxing, peaceful city.

There are fabulous historic hotels and B&B's right in the center of the historic district; just park your car and walk everywhere.

The Francis Marion Hotel is a beautiful historic hotel; they also have a day spa. I haven't stayed there in about 10 years, but we definitely enjoyed our stay there. (we just prefer the smaller B&B's when in Charleston)

Another gorgeous historic hotel with a day spa which friends of ours recently stayed in is the Wentworth Mansion.. they loved the place.

Best Wishes!

If you do not mind going to Asheville and budget not a problem go to the Grove Park Inn. Historic building with a modern spa with everthing you could want. There is one weekend the Johnboy and Billy comedy classic that the hotel will be full and overpriced but any other weekend should be really nice.
