Driving thru NC to Richmond...what should we see?

Hi there,

We are driving from Orlando, FL to Richmond, VA and would like some suggestion on where to stop along the way that is "off the beaten path." Does anyone have any suggestions?

We like nature and food, and are open to seeing different things.

Thanks!

How much time were you thinking of devoting to the stopover?

It's not exactly "off the beaten path", but if you have at least a 1/2 day or so to devote to the stopover you might consider taking ~1 hr trip on I-40 West over to Durham and walking around Duke Gardens. Duke west campus with its impressive gothic architecture is also adjacent to the gardens.

Nearby, Duke Forest offers plenty of hiking opportunities; hiking maps may be purchased at the west campus bookstore or online. The Duke Lemur Center is also located in Duke Forest and offers tours.

If you have time you can also drive over to Chapel Hill and walk around on Franklin Street for an afternoon of "bohemian college town chic" browsing and noshing.

Durham, Chapel Hill and Raleigh offer a wealth of dining choices-if you let us know what type of dining experience you're interested in, we can offer more specific suggestions.

Another option is to head towards the coast. You might take US 74 east from Lumberton to Wilmington and the nearby beaches, then take I-40 back to I-95. Or you if you have lots of time you could follow US 17 up the coast as far as you'd like--lots of nature and good seafood along that route.

Or you could just take a short detour for some real barbecue at somewhere like B's in Greenville or Grady's in Dudley, NC.
