Family Stuff to Do?

Hello: We have three days to explore and see fall colors in and around Charlotte. We have two young ones 5 and 1yr. We do not want to do tons of driving since we will have alreasy drove 10 hrs to reach Charlotte. That being said- we want to do things like hayride, visit apple orchard, simple tour or something fun. We canceled the Pigeon Forge trip because of the multiple stops with airlines ans restrictive rental car prices. Where wouls tou suggest a base of operations be for the time we are in the Charlotte vicinity? Also, suggestions for fun outdoor activites also welcome!

thanks

Consider the NC mountains. Blowing Rock and Boone, have a lot to offer. A 2 hour drive from the Charlotte Airport.

The mountains get all "dressed" up in the fall. Pumpkins, hay stacks and festivals.

Some suggestions:

Pick Apples: Sky Top Orchards is about 2 hours from Charlotte

Discovery Place - Charlotte

Discovery Kids - Huntersville - like better for younger kids - they love it!!

Dan Nicholas Park - Salisbury about 1 hour from Charlotte - mostly outdoor

Yeah Charlotte is really not a place people come to see the leaves. The mountains are where you go for that. Seems a shame to drive just to Charlotte and not go on to where the fall colors really shine.

Tons of apple orchards near Hendersonville.

When is your trip? In the mts peak leaf season is the last two weeks of October maybe into Nov at lower elevations maybe earlier at the highest elevations.

Charlotte is not written in stone- I just picked that but we will go anywhere. Originally Pigeon Forge but I do not think we will have time to enjoy ourselves. The trip is open- the only requirement is that we are back to homebase arounf midmight the 28th. We want to drive to Jacksonville afterwork- expected arrival probably around 11pm. Then The next morning (thurs)drive somewhere at least 4 hrs to get to where we can see the START of fall colors then stay somehere the remiander of that Thursday.

It all comes down to not driving, driving, driving.... so much. And what is our ultimate destination? Is foliage more prevalent along the Coast or more toward the inner- from Jacksonville should we head northeast or northwest?

Driving Days:

Tues evening from 5pm-11pm :Jacksonville

Wed morning from 9am- 1-2pm: 4hrs destination?

Looking for suggestions on a final destination that we can get to by Thursday. We would depart back for homebase

Blowing Rock in the mountains. Chetola Resort offers several types of accommodation. Azalea Garden is another.

Your five year old may enjoy gem mining. Apple Orchards at Alta Pass .

Downtown Blowing Rock has a playground park for different ages.

Fall is just beautiful in the mountains

I would make home base in Asheville. You can go any direction and see the fall colors. It has a nice downtown and many small cities around it to visit.

All excellent suggestions - ooo! gem mining!! and the activities for the youngens sound great too ha!

I wanted to make Asheville the base. We did a weekend at a BB in 2006. Somewhere different was requested this time.

I guess state and or national parks are in the vicinity.

The nonstop flight time is just under 2hr.

Supppose a fall festival or two may be in the works? I'll search that.

Apple Orchard, apple orchard, playground park all are excellent ideas
