drive from Gatlinburg area to Ashville area

Trying to get info on the drive from Gatlinburg area to Ashville, NC and am worried about the drive and mountains If we go thru Knoxville on I40 does it go around the mountains? What about from Chattanooga to Cherokee how is the drive? Have developed a problem with altitude sickness and want to visit Biltmore! Thanks for your input

I40 comes through the mountains between Knoxville and Asheville. It is a four lane divided road that goes through some beautiful mountain scenery - I'm not sure of the elevations. If you come through Chattanooga you will be travelling at a lower elevation on some secondary roads. I think you will take US64 to Murphy, NC and then head on 19 (?) through Waynesville. That route is hilly but at a lower elevation. It's slower going because you go through towns. If you decide to go that way, Chattanooga is a great city. Worth a stop. Much nicer than Knoxville in my humble opinion.

I don't think altitude will be a problem. It occurs above 8000 ft. I've never heard of altitude sicknes in the eastern US, which is only about 6500 ft max. And certainly the drive from Gatlinburg to Asheville is no higher than 4000 ft.
