Road trip from Toronto!!

Hi everyone!

A friend and I are planning on road tripping from Toronto-Washignton D.C.(?)-Virignia-North Carolina and back or whatever route works best. We are in the preliminary stages of planning but are leaving early June! We have never been to this part of the states before and are looking for any suggestions concerning scenic routes, fun things to do (we are mid-20's and love adventure!), things to avoid etc. If anyone has any suggestions concerning this region, that would be helpful!

You have two options, one mountains and one coast, and if given enough time you could combine both into the same trip. First is to roughly follow Interstate 81 from the DC area down into the mountains of Virginia and on into NC via either I-77 or I-26. This route roughly parallels the Blue Ridge Parkway, a scenic byway that covers about 400 miles in VA and NC. You can hop on and off the parkway and interstates depending on how much time you have (the parkway is much slower going, with speed limits usually 45 mph and many curves to slow you down.) You may wish to spend a day or two in the Boone/Blowing Rock area, and on into Asheville, NC.

The second option is to explore the coastal areas by taking I-95 to I-64 in Richmond, then through Williamsburg, VA, Norfolk, and on to the Outer Banks of NC. You could spend quite a bit of time exploring the Outer Banks, visiting places like Duck, Nags Head/Kill Devil Hills, Manteo, Cape Hatteras, and Ocracoke Island.

And you could do both options by visiting the mountains, then driving across the state via I-40 and US 64 to the Outer Banks, then return to the DC area from there (or vice versa).

Good luck in your planning, and feel free to ask more questions as you narrow things down. Here are a few web sites that should help:
