Information Overload -please help!

Hi, My husband and I are having trouble deciding where to stay on our trip to NC. We are planning to go in late September for a week and will be driving from Ontario. We envision a vacation in a little beach town maybe near a harbor where we can walk the beach, stroll to cafes and restaurants, explore by bike or hike. (Yes, I just saw the movie 'Safe Haven' :)) Not a lot of crowds and we don't want to stay in a high rise or traditional hotel/motel. Also like the idea of staying in the mountains as long as there is water close by...any ideas? I guess we wouldn't be opposed to staying in 2 different places - one for beach and one in the mountains...Thanks for any suggestions!

Have you looked at Beaufort, NC and the Beaufort Inn? Very nice.
