Road trip starting in Charlotte

My husband and I are flying into Charlotte for a friend's wedding in late September. We then want to drive up to Washington before getting the train to New York.

What should we see and where should we visit/stay on our way? We don't have a large budget but have 2 weeks for the wedding, drive and a stay in Washington and New York.

Thanks

Are you flying back from New York or will you be returning from Charlotte? You can head up to Washington via the Blue Ridge Mountains or via the coast. Any preference?

We're flying out of New York and we like both mountains and coast. We live near the Welsh mountains so would probably opt for the coastal route.

One Way rental can be quite costly. You could go to Myrtle Beach SC, then continue up North to NC - Virginia - perhaps side-trip to Williamsburg...

Thanks, Sophie0811 for the tip about Williamsburg. We were thinking about Chesapeake Bay so that could fit in nicely. We can't really spare the time to go south before we go north, I think so Myrtle Beach might have to wait this time around.

Yes, there are additional fees on one-way car hire (£100-ish) but it's not as expensive as having to return to Charlotte from New York (and the flights are cheaper out of JFK too).
