Oregon itinerary

In 1990 I went to Oregon and Washington and it included Columbia River Gorge, a coastal drive, Mt. Rainier, Mt. Hood, and Silverton Falls State Park.

I'd like to go back. This time I'd be interested in seeing Columbia River Gorge again but would want a whole different itinerary. Can you offer suggestions of some other nice scenery ideas where I wouldn't have to drive to many hours from Portland.

Thanks.

We would be there some time from early June to early September for 7 days.

So, am I understanding you correctly; except for the Gorge, you don't want to include things you saw the last time?

Then, I think I'd point you to Crater Lake and central Oregon, the area around Bend and Sisters. Maybe add a night or two in Ashland.

Another thought would be northeast Oregon, with the Wallowas and Hell's Canyon.

Do you want to stay in Portland and do day trips?

Mt St Helens comes to mind ... maybe the wine country ...

Or maybe stay in a different city as mistletoe suggested?

Mistletoe has suggested some great places, but they are all 3 to 4 hours or more drive from Portland. You could spend two or three days in Bend and visit Sisters, Crater Lake, Newbery Crater, McKenzie Pass.

A couple of days around Ashland-Medford-Grants Pass, do the Hellgate Tour on the Rouge River.

A day trip from Portland to Mt. St. Helens--that's a 'must see'.

Might want to consider a sternwheeler or jet boat cruise up the Columbia Gorge. www.portlandspirit.com for info on that.
