HELP! First Time ever to the West Coast. What to do???

My bf and I have a business trip from Dec 7th thru the 18th in Portland. We have the weekend free, would like to rent a car and sightsee.

There are too many choices, what to do!

I would hate to come all the accross country from Philadelphia to not see the Pacific Ocean. We would also like to visit some local wineries.

Any suggestions on which coastal town to spend the night in would be greatly appreciated.

If you stay in Manzinita right nearby is the winery in Nehalem!

Not sure what their hours will be that time of year. It may be rainy but then again it is Oregon so you never can tell. We have gone that time of the year and had sun and only had to wear sweatshirts. That is not the rule- it is very changeable- the weather I mean.

Yes Manzanita a great choice. we spent 3 or 4 winter days there last year, sormy one day with ocean front place fun ow watch the storm, but beach was walkable every day. It is a very small town. If there was night life we missed it.

Cannon beach also good beach town and should not be crowded that time of year. bigger twon some nice shops. trendy place that is a little more costly.

Newport has more inside things to do, aquarium, marine science center. Also has interesting bayfront. beach there also good but most motels are 88 steps above the beach.

Although they could easily win an award for worst website ever, I've always liked this place:

You sometimes luck out with the weather when you're a little inland--and the in-room hot tubs are nice for warming up. And I love Wheeler. The restaurant/bar there is epic. On the other hand, if you want to watch the storms roll in, you might check out Seaside/Canon Beach. The hotels there almost border on affordable in the winter!

It will be easy to visit local wineries during your visit (although some will be closed for the season.)

The wineries in both Yamhill and Washington counties are easy to reach from Portland, as are the wineries in the Salem area.

I would contact Grape Escape Winery tours http://www.grapeescapetours.com/ ...your hotel may even work with them already.

There is a poster here who will probably come in here and tell you that Archery Summit, Domain Drouhin and Domane Serene are MUST SEE'S. While they are big and fancy, in my opinion, there are far better stops.

Here is a link to our wine advisory board...they have all of the wineries listed and you can find info on who is open, when.

Cannon Beach or Seaside would be nice choices for your time on the coast. What is your budget? :)

Weather might be your downfall. Keep an eye out, you can call ODOT in the morning before you come also.

Close to Manzanita is Arch Cape.. the Inn at Arch Cape and there is also the Arch Cape House ...both beautiful and in a wonderful location. The Inn requires a minimum stay but not sure if that applies in Dec..
