jogging routes

Hi

I need to continue my half-marathon training while on vacation for the next 3 weeks. We will be travelling up through Crater lake and Bend, and then down the coast. I would appreciate any advice on where would be good to do 10-14 mile runs - particular beaches/trails etc? Not too hilly please!

Many thanks!

Amanda

Our coastal experts can tell you where the longest sandy beaches are. You can decide whether to run along the harder surf sand or the more difficult soft sand. Eugene probably has the best running trails in the state (after all, this is Track Town USA!), but you didn't say we're on your itinerary. Portland also has good running trails. Your elimination of hills rules out the dunes and most of the Cascades. Shame you're not coming to Eugene...you'd find lots of serious runners with whom to share your training sessions.

From Beachside SP, the flat beach stretches several miles in both directions. Oceanside RV park is next to Bastendorff county park. Bastendorff Road is fairly quiet although I seem to remember it goes uphill. Cape Arago Hwy is busy and kind of narrow for large RVs so wouldn't suggest running there. At Cape Blanco you can go down to the beach, but I'm not sure how many miles it goes. The road is pretty quiet and there is a lot of open, empty land but again not sure how many miles you can rack up.

If you stay at Patrick's Point SP there are roads all through there, but the frontage road (old 101) is narrow with no verge so that's not a good idea. Gold Beach has the beach, of course. Eureka area - just north of Arcata is Janes Road off 101. There are a lot of country roads with little traffic through there that wind around pastures and go out to Mad River park. Also, Samoa has long beaches and little road traffic.

While you're in the Arcata area, here are some running trails (Arcata is home to Humboldt State University and is nextdoor to Patrick Point SP.

And using dailymile.com you can check out the rest of your travel route yourself.
