Tent/Yurt Camping Oregon Coast Near Portland

Heading to Portland for our first visit and planning to spend 2 days exploring the coast. Would like to stay in a campground along the coast in either our tent or a yurt. Since we have a Federal Access Pass, we'd prefer to stay in a federal campground to take advantage of the discounted rate, but not a necessity. We would easily pay more for scenic views, peace and quiet. So far, we were considering Cape Lookout, Nehalem Bay, Beverly Beach, Tillicum Beach and Sandbeach. Since we only have two days, we'd like to stay in a location where there is a lot to see and do. We especially enjoy scenic views, light hiking and wildlife viewing, in addition to sampling some local cuisine. Any recommendations?

Of those parks you mention, Tillicum the the only Federal Park. The rest are State Parks.

Given your criteria, I think Beverly Beach would fit the bill quite nicely. The campgropund is located on the east side of the hwy, but it is a short walk under the hwy on to a great beach. Newport is just a few miles south and has tons of attractions to keep the average person busy for more than two days.

You don't say when you are coming, but State Parks have a 9 month reservation window, meaning you can (an MANY do) make your reservations 9 months in advance. Since Yurts are in limited supply, it might be difficult to find an available one for the summer months, especially at a park as busy as B Beach.

Good luck!!!

I suggest Nehalem Bay (State park) for yurt camping on the coast. They book up pretty quickly for the weekend, although Sunday-Monday might work. The yurts are just steps from the beach and you can walk down the beach to the pretty little town of Manzanita. The There's much to see in the Tilamook Bay area - an amazing lighthouse on the cape, great beaches, kayaking, etc. Then if you head inland a bit there's wine tasting. The state campground yurts are fantastic.

We're staying at a yurt at Beachside (near Yachats) in a few weeks. I hear good things about this area as well.

There are Oregon State Parks located on the coast in scenic areas, but there are no ocean views from the yurts or campsites :-(

The only exception is Beachside (which is along the highway) and Harris Beach up on the hill near Brookings which has a few campsites with ocean views.

Tillicum is directly on the beach with views from the campsites, but it is also on highway 101. Here are some reviews about it:

Heading to Portland with two friends. The three of us want to spend 2 days exploring the Mt. Hood National Forest. We would like to stay in a campground in either a tent or a yurt or a small inexpensive cabin in Mt hood national forest near a body of water. We would also like to fish (need rental gear). Since we only have two days, we'd like to fit in at least one short (1-2hrs) and a longer (6-7hrs) (intermediate skill level) scenic hike with skyline view. preferably not more than 100 miles east of portland. Any recommendations?

Hi Dave 135...welcome aboard.

You'll get a better response by starting a new thread (click on "Ask a Question" above) and changing the title to an area more specific to your search. Many people on the forum with info on the Mt. Hood region might miss this posting because it refers to the Oregon Coast.
