25 days itinerary from San Francisco to Portland

Hi!

We are a Canadian couple in the early-thirties travelling from San Francisco to Portland for 25 days from mid-June to early-July. We want to spend time in those two cities, to go to museums, discover artsy neighborhoods and enjoy great food. We would also like to see beautiful landscapes and nature. We don’t like camping and we are not serious hikers, but we like trekking for half a day to a day at a time. We are thinking about doing some wine and beer touring. We would like to know if our itinerary is feasible or if we should remove some destinations to spend more time at other places. We would be pleased to hear your comments and suggestions!

Day 1 : arrival in San Francisco

Day 2-3-4 : San Francisco

Day 5 : Point Reyes

Day 6-7 : Sonoma Valley (Which wineries would you recommend?)

Day 8 : Mendocino

Day 9-10 : Redwoods (Which one do you recommend? Which trails?)

Day 11 to 14 : Oregon Coast (Where should we sleep? What are the most interesting

points of view? What are the best state parks to do trekking or to sleep in a yurt? )

Day 15-16 : Hood River and Mount Hood National Forest

Day 17 : Bend

Day 18-19 : Crater Lake

Day 20-21 : Willamette Valley (Which city could be a good base to visit wineries?Any recommendation for wineries?)

Day 22-23-24 : Portland

Day 25 : flight back

Hi there,

It looks like you would like to just drive through the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, check out the highlights (waterfalls, Fruit Loop and wineries) and up on Oregon 35 to Timberline Lodge and back to Portland through the city of Sandy on 26.

Does that sound about right? It is doable in a day but more enjoyable for two with a night in Hood River.

For days 9 and 10, if you are driving on US-101, you will have an opportunity to drive the Avenue of the Giants just north of Garberville, California; just north of Orick, California you will find the Newton P. Drury Scenic Bypass. Both of these roads pass through miles of redwoods while affording easy on-easy off to 101. This lodging is located within the Avenue of the Giants: www.mirandagardens.com/area.html‎.

To add to bobmrg's information - both those areas also offer walking trails as short or long as you'd like. Also check out the Coastal Trail (you'll see the brown signs) which is an old stagecoach/wagon road of the late 19th Century. It makes for some great views and easy walking.

You might also be interested in staying in Trinidad.

Along the Oregon coast, Samuel Boardman State Park, Cape Perpetua and Oswald West State park all offer hiking - plus there are many other areas of various difficulty levels.

Do have your room booked at Crater Lake?

I'd spend more time around Bend; you really one need one day at Crater Lake (especially if you are not hikers). Among attractions to consider around Bend are Newberry Crater sites, the Cascade Lakes scenic drive, the High Desert museum and Smith Rock State Park.

Jedediah Smith State Park and the primitive but driveable road that pass through it offer great scenery and plenty of chances to amble around among the giant trees.

Thanks for the advice! We haven't booked yet at Crater Lake, but we're thinking about doing it in a day and staying in a city nearby.

I knew one day in Bend wasn't enough but I didn't know where to spend less time! We will probably follow your advice and do Crater lake in one day.
