Road Trip

I am in the early planning stages of a late May trip to Pennsylvania. We are coming up from Georgia and planning to stay from a Sunday through Saturday. It will be me, husband and two children 9 & 12. I know we want to spend some time in the Amish area, and maybe head up to Erie to see the lake. I am not sure of what else we might like to do. Any suggestions would be great.

I agree that your kids are a perfect age for Hershey/Hersheypark as well as Gettysburg (my kids are 10 and almost 12 so I know the age!).

If you enjoy the outdoors, you may want to consider a stay in the Laurel Highlands. In Ohiopyle, there is a great rail trail for biking and hiking as well as other trails of varying difficulty. There is also excellent whitewater rafting. Then, there is the famous Frank Lloyd Wright designed home, Falling Water - and yes, my kids enjoyed the tour there, and I was surprised that they did!

6 days isn't a whole lot of time to see a large part of the state. Visit the website given by Mike and perhaps narrow down to a region that has a lot of things you are interested in seeing.

Some things to check out in Erie, are Presque Isle State Park, Waldameer Water World, the Erie Maritime Museum & US Brig Niagara, and the Erie Zoo.

Late May is a gorgeous time of year. Pennsylvania has many beautiful state parks with lots to do. Here is a link to the state park map:

Do your children have any particular interests--science, nature, history?

Thanks for all of the ideas and websites. The state park one is great and I think we might try to visit one or two. The children really aren't into amusement parks that much and I hate to spend the $$ when they will only ride a few rides if any. We will probably try to stick to historical sites, so Gettysburg will be on the list.
