Road Trip through Central PA

My wife and I are leaving on the 4th of July next week and driving through PA up Rt. 15. We love to try out of the way restuarants. Any recommendations on where we should stop? Any other suggestions on what we should see?

You will be traveling approximately 200 miles through PA on Route 15. There are a lot of attractions along the way. Do you have specific interests? Knowing those interests will help narrow down some suggestions.

Good question...no we dont have really anything in mind. I know we'll be basically following the river most of the way up Rt. 15 so I assume there are some good spots along that route. Any suggestions? Breweries? local restaurants? Good Spots to stop and tour?

Frederick, MD has a nice downtown and brew pub. Avoid Gettysburg, it's the 150th Anniversary of the Battle and will be lots of traffic. Harrisburg riverfront will have the annual Kipona festival, food music, etc. There is ABC Brewery in the city.

Take note of the Rockville Bridge, worlds longest stone masonary bridge http://www.therockvillebridge.com/

The Millersburg Ferry is very unique http://www.millersburgferry.org/

Several wineries close to 11/15 along the river http://www.stonebarnwinery.com‎

Lewisburg has Bucknell University

Williamsport features the Little League Baseball Museum http://www.littleleague.org/learn/museum.htm

Between there and NY, there isn't alot but mountains

Corning NY is a nice stop, the Glass Museum is very cool

Then on to real wine country

We've driven that route seveal times north of Harrisburg. There isn't much that stands out. You do go through Selinsgrove (not much there), Sunbury (better chance), Lewisburg, home of Bucknell College (the best chance to find what you are looking for), and Williamsport (better chance). I will tell you this, north of Williamsport there is NOTHING but forest and mountains until you get to Corning, NY.

There isn't much in the way of sights to see. Lewistown has Bucknell University and some shops. May find some nifty local eateries there. I had relatives in Sunbury but don't remember much to see there.

Williamsport is home to Little League Baseball. But if that doesn't interst you, not so much there. You can take a 1 hour river cruise in Williamsport: http://www.ridehiawatha.com/

The drive is pretty and there is a state park on an island in the middle of the Susquehanna River at Milton, just north of Lewisburg.

We've liked Skeeters BBQ up in Selinsgrove:

...mostly because it has an awesome view of the river. But the food was good too.

The Fence Drive-In in Milton PA is also interesting. It's another local spot right along the river. (They don't have a website, but type it into Google search and you'll be able to pick up some images and a map. Definitely an old-fashioned kind of place.) And you can stop at the Milton State Park as the previous poster suggested.

The Susquehanna Valley Visitors Bureau has nice suggestions as well:

I will agree with previous posters that Lewisburg would be a good place to stop. The Country Cupboard would be a good stop for a meal. You can also check out Bucknell University and the downtown area.

If you are looking for something out of the ordinary, Clyde Peeling's Reptiland is just north of Lewisburg.

The Bull Frog Brewery in Williamsport is worth checking out.

You can also take a trolley tour of Williamsport and as a previous poster suggested, ride the Hiawatha river boat.
