Driving in winter...need advice..Please

We are flying into Allentown and driving to the Poconos this coming February. Do we need to rent an SUV or something with 4-wheel drive? Will we need chains on the tires? We are clueless about this climate in winter. We know it will be cold, but do not know if a lot of snow is simply possible...or very, very likely this time of year. Any tips would be appreciated. Thank you.

It's hard to answer this, as winter weather in this area can be highly erratic! We have had some of our largest blizzards in February; other years, there is no snow. I would probably not make special reservations in terms of vehicle rentals, but I would watch www.weather.com, entering "Allentown, PA" as the trip comes closer. You can get a long range weather forecast and make arrangements accordingly. By the way, the Poconos tend to get more snow than Allentown. Weather.com lists average snowfall in Allentown for all of February at about 3 inches. Do not assume you will be driving in heavy snow!

Thanks so much for taking time to reply. That sets my mind at ease, except for that blizzard comment. That would be a new one for us! Fine as long as we aren't experiencing it in a rural ditch! Ha Ha! Take care.

They will be well-prepared with snow removal equipment.

The only problem you will have is driving in snow while it is falling. It can get especially tricky when it is falling quickly and the snow plows can't keep up.

The snow is cleared within 24 hours after a snowfall.

Also be assured that the routes from Lehigh Valley Airport to the Pocono's are major highways (four lane). They tend to be opened first if there is significant snow. If these are closed, nobody will be going anywhere, which seldom happens!
