Should we stay two days in Providence or Newport?

We are going to take a New England Islands cruise to the following places this Summer leaving from and returning to Providence:

Day 1- Providence

Day 2- New Bedford, MA

Day 3- Nantucket Island, MA

Day 4- Martha's Vineyard, MA

Day 5- Bristol, RI/ Fall River, MA

Day 6- Newport, RI

Day 7- Block Island, RI

Day 8- Providence

We'll fly into Providence from Atlanta and get there one or two days early. We are avid photographers and enjoy nice scenerey and are wondering if we would better enjoy a couple of days in Newport, Providence or somewhere else close? We enjoy sunrises, sunsets, scenics and other colorful photography amd enjoy museums with "old" things and places like Plymouth or Jamestown but are not wild about art museums or ancient history relics(1000 or more years ago).

I'd appreciate comments about which area to stay and where to stay. we will have a rental car.

Thanks for any input or links.

You're stopping at some pretty nice places, that will have all sorts of photographic opportunities...each stop will have it's own unique character.

The only place I see that is not included on your itinerary is Cape Cod. Perhaps you could spend a day or 2 out there exploring. Providence is only 1 1/2 hours away from the Mid-cape area. If you don't mind spending a little bit of time in the rental car you could hit the Outer Cape with the National Seashore Beaches.

If you don't really want to spend time driving (or hitting Cape traffic on weekends), you could base yourself in Newport or Providence area and explore from either of those locations. If you can find the lodging, in the summer I'd say stay in Newport, you can explore from there, and there is more summertime activity there.

Since Newport is a stop on your cruise itinerary, I would stay in Providence. There are many nice places to stay, but two places just out of the city center have free parking. They are the Radisson Providence Harbor and the Providence Marriott on Orms St. An early morning or sunset walk along the Riverwalk, a stroll along Benefit St., a visit to our State House would all be interesting and provide good picture material. Bristol is a small coastal town with a lovely state park, Colt State Park, where you can walk, picnic, and enjoy harbor and island views. It is only a half hour drive from Providence. I would also visit Roger Williams National Memorial to learn about Rhode Island's founding. It is a small park with a parking area for easy access.
