Where should I go in Rhode Island?

Hi -- I'll be in Providence on business in mid October. I'll be free from Saturday afternoon until Monday afternoon, when I need to get back to Providence airport. So I have two nights free, and would like to spend them somehere in RI other than Providence. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Newport would be the obvious choice.

Depending on what your likes are Bristol for Saturday afternoon to do the bike path and sight see and Newport for the Full day on Sunday fill in with what you missed in Providence on the East Side before heading back to the airport on Monday.

If you can’t find anything left open in Newport or if you find it too pricey you could try my favorite which is Jacob Hill Inn in Seekonk just 10 minutes east of Downtown Providence but in the country with lot’s of foliage around them. Theyare on the way to Bristol and Newport.

They have rooms with Jacuzzi tubs and fireplaces if they are not full already. What was I thinking. Still it is worth a try very relaxing after a full day of running around.

Yes, of course, Newport would be a great choice. You've got the wharf area for dining and shopping, the mansions, the Cliff Walk, Tennis Hall of Fame and many historic buildings. Look at this website:

You may also get to see the new Queen Mary while she's in port, too; she's supposed to be here sometime this month.

If you were here in the summer, I'd also recommend my area -- Westerly and Watch Hill. Keep it in mind if you come back this way and love the beach.

Thanks, everyone. I'm put off Newport as I've heard it's pretty expensive. Was hoping for somewhere with some nice walks, decent but not too expensive seafood places, and some not too fancy hotels, motels. What's Westerly like, ILoveRI?

Westerly's a great town. We've got a small downtown area on the Pawcatuck River with shops and dining and a sweet little movie theater (Revival House) that shows art films and second run films. There's a pretty park right in the center of town where we have art festivals and summer concerts, a small theater (Granite Theater) that has an active season. Drive 15 minutes from downtown and you've got the Atlantic Ocean (Misquamicut Beach). Again, about 10 - 15 minutes from downtown, slightly further south, is Watch Hill (part of Westerly, but another world away) with its gorgeous homes (mini-Newport) and the small shop area with the carousel.

Here's a couple of websites with more information:

http://www.westerlychamber.org/

http://www.visitwesterly.com/

http://www.misquamicut.org/

http://westerly.govoffice.com/

That all being said, Westerly is usually more of a summer destination for tourists, but we all sure love living here, summer or winter.

If the weather's good on the day you'd plan to visit, you could keep yourself occupied by nosing around the shops downtown with lunch in any number of places, a peaceful walk on the beach in Misquamicut, gaping at the houses in Watch Hill, etc. Check the Chamber website; they have duck boat tours of the town, but I don't know if they suspend them in the fall. That would be a great way to see the town.
