Free weekend in South Carolina

My husband is travelling to South Carolina on business, from Australia, and will have a free weekend. Any good suggestions about what he could do to make the most of it? He is a thirty-something outdoorsy type. He will be based in Anderson near Greenville but is happy to drive a couple of hours.

Thanks!

If he enjoys history he may want to make the drive to Charleston. It was settled in the 1600's and has lots of interesting things - plantations, historic homes and buildings the oldest public museum in the country, Patriots Point (you can tour the USS Yorktown aircraft carrier), Fort Sumter & Fort Moutrie (both can be toured), etc. There are the local beaches to visit for a run or a swim.

Greenville, which will be close to him, does not have the history, but is a nice small town with good restaurants.

Asheville, NC is not far and has the Blue Ridge Parkway, a beautiful scenic drive thru the mountains. Lots of hiking, etc

What time of year will he be here? That may make a difference in where he chooses to go.

He would enjoy checking out the waterfalls and trails around Highlands, North Carolina. If he is going to be here in the summer, he might want to consider making a trip to Sliding Rock outside of Brevard, North Carolina. Lots of fun!

The places that Endosunshine mentioned are wonderful also. Your husband can hardly go wrong!

Echoing pretty much everyone else, certainly spend some time in Charleston (highest priority on the list). Asheville would be a close second and is only about 75 minutes away from Greenville. Greenville is a wonderful small city with a ton of great restaurants (with due respect to endo, I would hardly characterize Greenville as a small town, seeing that it has several buildings over ten stories in height).

Beyond that, the waterfalls and state parks along the NC/SC border are quite nice. Clemson and the South Carolina Botanic Gardens are great as well. If he makes his way to the coast and has more time, Beaufort and Hunting Island State Park are quite nice as well.
