snomobiling vacation with kids where to stay and rent sleds

We are thinking of taking kids (ages 11 and 10) snomobiling in black hills between christmas and new years. We would need to rent sleds - how old do you have to be to drive one? Where is nice and convienent place to stay close to trails?

Hi beth2go -

I believe you can rent snowmobiles at the Spearfish Canyon Lodge in Spearfish Canyon. The South Dakota tourism website, http://www.blackhillsbadlands.com/, has a winter guide called Romancing the Snow that contains snowmobiling information. Spearfish Canyon Lodge might be a place to consider staying. My sister and brother-in-law have stayed there during the summer months and liked it. You can check out reviews of the lodge to get other's views. If you are interested in renting a private cabin here are several websites that rent cabins in the Lead/Deadwood/Spearfish Canyon area.

Hope this information will help you. Hopefully a local with more knowledge of snowmobile activities will reply.
