You can easily make it from Denver to Custer SD in one day.

You can drive from Custer with a quick stop in Deadwood, on to Sundance and Devils Tower and another stop in Battle of Little Bighorn and be in Billings for dinner. If you do not want to do that then do Spearfish and Deadwood and stay in Deadwood then go to Devils Tower , Battle of Little Bighorn and on to Billings for the night.

Thanks for the your reply we thought about going straight to Custer but my other half does the driving and does'nt like driving more than about 3 1/2 hours a day (mind you the way we stop at everything that takes our eye it 31/2 hours takes about 6 hours) also we will be very jet lagged, so thought we would take it easy and have plenty of time to stop where ever we see something we would like to do.

We are also English 3 1/2 hours driving is an awfull long way for us we are just not used to it, i have been watching the forums and the mileage some people put in is amazing!!

Yes we do love our roads here in American- we drive about 1-2 hours one way just to have dinner at a special restaurant!!

Be sure and look at my second comment about doing Devils Tower and Battle of Little Bighorn and on to Billings. It will not require a lot of driving if you do Deadwood and Spearfish in one day and stay in Deadwood then the next day do the rest of the drive toward Billings.

Good luck.

Hi PeachBelle

I see what you mean its not much of a detour, i will think about that one i was hoping to hike round the tower and if i know my partner he will be ages at Custers battefield he is so into western history thats why i thought it better to see it with plenty of time is there anything else around that area of interest?

I second PeachBelle's comments. If you are driving to Billings, then do Devil's Tower en route.

When you finish seeing Spearfish Canyon, why dont you stay in Spearfish. why go all the way back to Deadwood? Deadwood is a "dead" town. Nothing to do. If you go ahead and spend the night in Spearfish, you will be closer to "Devils Tower". The only thing Deadwood has going for it is the casinos.

If you want to see Bears up close, go to Bear Country USA outside of Rapid City. It is a drive thru park. We saw bears, mountain lions, white wolves, elk, bison and mountain goats.

On the 17th, as you head to Wall Drugs and Badlands, why dont you visit Bear Country USA early in the morning. (I would suggest be there when they open). You will have time to do this, the drug store and the Badlands.

If you want to see animals up close, this is the place.
