Options other than Cades Cove...

We are planning another trip to Pigeon Forge in April and I have just read on here that Cades Cove will be closed for repaving. Also my second choice may also be closed (Roaring Fork). We totally loved Cades Cove last year and were looking forward to doing it again so now with it closed I need to replan. Any suggestions as to anything similiar (esp with the old buildings and such to go into) would be great. We will be going to Dollywood and possibly Wonderworks, but want something relaxing in the outdoors (and yes, free is always nice). Would also be interested in seeing waterfalls, we have a group of 6 and the youngest is a 7 year old so I don't want too far of a hike, but I think we could handle a moderate hike, we are all very active.

So, any ideas? Everything would be appreciated! Thanks.

You might check out the Greenbriar area of the park. It's under-utilized compared to the rest of the park and Ramsay Cascades is one o f the best falls in the park. You can also see the John Messer barn and the Smokey Mtn Hiking Club cabin.

Coastermeister makes a good suggestion. Little River Road and all its offshoots are worth your time, and I know of a few waterfalls around there. There's Hen Wallow Falls in Cosby, which is a four mile hike, Fern Branch Falls in Greenbrier, and Mouse Creek Falls in Big Creek (four miles).

If you want to experience a bit of the park fairly similar to Cades Cove, I recommend spending a night on the North Carolina side at the beginning or end of your trip and spending a day in Cataloochee. It holds a variety of historic structures, elk, old growth forest, cemeteries, and trails along streams.

Hi kimmyann,

Great idea from Kristian about Cataloochee. Here's a link to the GSMNP website about Cataloochee: http://tinyurl.com/yf4hs3g

If you have never done so already, drive over to the Oconaluftee Visitor Center and visit the Mountain Farm Museum. http://tinyurl.com/ykwkkvo

Behind the Sugarland's Visitor Center is the Fighting Creek Nature Trail. It's an easy trail that will take you to an old cabin and spring. Be sure to pick up a self guided map guide at the head of the trail.

One other place you may want to check out is Elkmont. http://tinyurl.com/2vg5ju

Ah, the Mountain Farm Museum. That's another great stop, though not a short drive from Pigeon Forge.

Elkmont, Sugarlands, Greenbrier (the one west of Sugarlands, not the one off of Highway 321), and Tremont all make for good places to spend some time when touring along Little River Road.

I agree with Blue, I've heard alot about Cataloochee and plan on going there next week on my trip. It's not as long as Cades Cove and doesn't have as many of the old buildings, but as for the wildlife it's about the same. There are lots of other places in the park to enjoy scenic views and hiking trails.

Thanks for the responses. Looks like the Museum would be the closest to us if we are staying in Pigeon Forge, not really wanting to drive too far since we are driving from Va Beach to Kentucky (to visit family), then to Pigeon Forge. I'll keep reading some of the older forums and see what else I might come up with too.
