to Amarillo from Fort Worth: driving or flying?

Our road trip will start from Houston and gradually climb up to Dallas. My first impression is that the journey from there to Amarillo is long without significant highlights (Or am I mistaking?).

I checked flights from Dallas FW to Amarillo and the price is more than fair. Convincing arguments to choose the car anyway are very welcome here. Thanks!

I would keep the car and drive to Amarillo. While the scenery isn't spectacular, it's a very peaceful drive, unlike dealing with airports. Plus, you'll need the car again when you get to Amarillo, so you'll spend a day dropping off a rental car, dealing with airports, catching a flight, picking up a rental car, etc. when you could just spend a nice 6 hours or so in the car.

There are some places to stop along the way. Archer City is the childhood home of the American writer Larry McMurtry. He wrote the Lonesome Dove series and The Last Picture Show. Archer City is the setting for the Last Picture Show and home to Mr. McMrutry's huge bookstore called Booked Up. It's a tiny little town, but you could stop a browse the bookstore and have lunch at the cafe in downtown, if you're interested in that sort of thing.

Quanah, Texas, is also on the way. It's home to the famous Comanche chief Quanah Parker. It has a small downtown area with restaurants and a couple of small museums.

I would also keep the car...the plane would not be a full size plane.. after all said and done with recommended airport arrival etc, you are not saving that much time.

You could also squeek by Lubbock and visit the Buddy Holly Museum.

also, if you are visiting in the summer, you may want to catch the outdoor musical 'TEXAS' in Palo Duro State Park (and the park itself)

Your remarks make sense and also thanks for the suggestions. As I will be travelling in September I'll miss the musical :-(

Although you will miss the musical, don't miss visiting Palo Duro Canyon.
