Advice on Highways down the east side to Houston

We are traveling into Texas from Illinois the first week of April heading to Mission. We would like to see some of the country.

How is the condition of highway 59 down the state? Would we be smarter to just stay on the freeways?

Springtime in East Texas will see lots of blooms. You might go through Tyler to see azaleas and other flowers. http://www.tylerazaleatrail.com/index.htm US 59 is a good highway. In addition or alternatively you could drive West of Austin to see wildflowers in the pretty Hill Country.

US 59 is more of a divided highway, until you get close to Houston. The roads are in good condition, so no worries there.

You do need to worry about your speed though. Watch the speed llimit signs carefully, and obey them at all times!!! The small town police will get you on the speed, especially bad between Nacogdoches and Houston.

Welcome to Texas!!
