Thanksgiving in Texas

My entire family (husband, 9yr old son, eldest daughter & her partner) will be in Texas for Thanksgiving visiting our middle child who is studying at UT (Austin).

We have a week in Texas and while we are looking forward to exploring Austin, I think Sophie ( the student) would like to get away from Austin for a few days.

We are from Australia and would really like to have a traditional Thanksgiving experience. Any ideas of awesome places we might visit/ stay/eat at?

I would stay in the Hill Country area, there is just too much to see/do there. Look at the triangle area between San Antonio, Austin and Fredericksburg. There are lots of neat little towns between those larger cities too.

I've not spent Thanksgiving out there, but lots of restaurants offer a traditional Thanksgiving meal.

Welcome to Texas!.

Virtually all of the hotels will have a fancy (expensive) buffet for Thanksgiving.

Hill country is a nice getaway and has lots of things:

Artisans at Rocky Hill http://www.artisansatrockyhill.com/ (one of my favorite art galleries)

The Benini Foundation Galleries and Sculpture Ranch http://www.sculptureranch.com/

Becker Vineyards www.beckervineyards.com/

Wild Seed Farm http://www.wildseedfarms.com/

Luckenbach, TX http://www.luckenbachtexas.com/

Old Tunnel WMA …state.tx.us/huntwild/…

Admiral Nimitiz Museum http://www.nimitz-museum.org/

Enchanted Rock State Park http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/park/enchantd/,

Three of my favorite restaurants:

Fredericksburg Brew Pub http://www.yourbrewery.com/

Hilltop Cafe http://www.hilltopcafe.com/

Hondo's On Main http://www.hondosonmain.com/

Kirchman Gallery in Johnson City http://www.kirchmangallery.com/

San Antonio is another option - quieter and slower than Austin. Traditional sights like the zoo (one of my favorite places to walk off Thanksgiving dinner) the Alamo and the Riverwalk - not terribly exciting for a college student, but maybe a nice change.

The traditional Thanksgiving dinner will include Roasted Turkey, Dressing with giblets and gravy, yams, corn, cranberry sauce/chutney, bread rolls, perhaps mashed (russet) potatoes, green beans. Baked Ham is often included for those adverse to turkey. Regional differences vary and include anything that someone likes. In Austin, I wouldn't be surprised to find a smoked turkey as star on some tables.

Beyond that - the sky is the limit for buffets. Since you mentioned traditional, I'd enlist Sophie to ask around and make reservations early. (I'm in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, so can't offer anything specific)

I see that you are from Oz. If you are interested in seeing American football, the Dallas Cowboys always play on Thanksgiving Day in Dallas. Last year there were several overseas visitors who were asking about it. Just an idea.

Thank you all for your suggestions :-)

Sounds like the area has a lot to offer.

We are a family of sports enthusiasts and really keen to see a football game so that may be a good option.

Can't wait to taste some Texas BBQ either!

If the budget allows, http://www.rose-hill.com/ in the Hill Country near Stonewall. Or for a city experience, La Mansion del Rio on San Antonio's River Walk omnihotels.com/FindAHotel/SanAntonioLaMansio…

If you are truly interested in the football game, keep in mind that the Thanksgiving game is very popular and you will need to purchase tickets well in advance.

The UT football team will play at home in Austin on the Saturday following Thanksgiving.
