From Fort Worth, west to Texas Panhandle

My wife and I are taking a 14 day driving tour of Texas, starting and finishing at Dallas Fort Worth. There are a few gaps in our itinerary, especially between Fort Worth and the Panhandle. We plan to visit the canyons south of Amarillo, and also to drive Hwy70 through the traditional small towns en route to San Angelo. The question is, where should we stop between Fort Worth and Palo Duro/Caprock canyons, and what should we see. I don't want to drive the 350miles in one day, so would prefer an overnight stop half way. Problem is, there seems to be little to recommend places like Wichita Falls, Vernon, or Childress.

We're looking for an authentic Texan experience all the way, and prefer to stay in independent accommodation such as B&Bs or guest ranches. We love the outdoors, but we also love small town America. Any suggestions? We're in our 30's/40's, and both fit and active.

Vernon has the small but good Red River Valley Museum and good lodging choices, but it's thin on restaurants as is usually the case in small towns. One possibility is to drive on to Clarendon and stay at the Bar H ranch which includes meals in the rate. Here's the link http://www.barhduderanch.com/index.html October is a good time to visit.

Texas Time Travel, presented by the Texas Historical Commission, is an excellent source for information regarding small towns in Texas. Click the link, then click the "state of Texas" region map. The red pins represent destination points of interests. http://texastimetravel.com/
