Suggestions for family

My family (2 adults & 2 children 8yrs & 18yrs) will be visiting the USA for 5 weeks in December / January. Texas will be the last stop on our holiday, we will be arriving in Dallas on 18 January and departing on the evening of 22 January.

We would really like to finish off our holiday with a stay at somewhere special and memorable. We don't mind hiring a car to drive to our destination and we were thinking anywhere within a 4 hour drive of Dallas would be acceptable. Generally we prefer at least 4 star accommodations but would be willing to forego this for a nice clean comfortable ranch experience.

We had thought that a ranch style experience would be something different and would be a good opportunity for us to spend time together doing family activities such as horse riding, roping, fishing, shooting etc

We had found the Wildcatter ranch at Graham but we were then disappointed to learn that children have to be 10 years or older to participate in the group trail riding unless they are an experienced rider.

After researching trip advisor a lot of comments suggest that Austin is very scenic so we started to look around here, we found a resort property that sounded great, Travaasa. The accommodation and activities eg rope course, trail rides, bike riding, archery etc were really appealing but then after checking on their website it states that the resort only accepts guests 16 years or older.

I am hoping that there may be other ranches or resorts that might suit our family, any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Check the Bandera area. There are several around there that might fit what you are looking for.

I agree to head down to the Austin and San Antonio area. There is so much to see and do in this area.

Bandera is great for the horseback riding/ranch experience and most, if not all, the ranches will allow your 8 year old to ride. You can do anything from a day trip to overnight(s).

Welcome to Texas!!

While I've never personally visited there, the Mayan Dude Ranch has received lots of glowing reports, and is in the Bandera area. They accept children as young as 6. Here's the website: http://www.mayanranch.com/

The drive from DFW airport to Bandera is about a five-hour drive, however.

Welcome to Texas!

We've stayed at the Mayan several times over the years (not terribly recently however) and have always been pleased. You can also check www.duderanches.com (click on the Texas link) for other ranches in that area or perhaps closer to the DFW area.

Where will you be before you come to Texas? There are dude ranches around the state which might be convenient to a destination other than Dallas before you depart from DFW, e.g. San Antonio for the Bandera dude ranches.

I just looked at the timing of your trip, and realized that you'll be here at what could easily be the coldest part of our winter. Normally there is little or no snow in the Bandera area, but temperatures can be quite chilly at that time of year. Horseback riding should be okay, as the horses generate some heat, but other outdoor activities may be quite chilly, with daytime highs possibly in the high-30's to low-60's F. At a minimum, be prepared for the weather by layering your clothes.

Thanks everyone for all of the suggestions it certainly has helped. The rest of our itinerary is pretty well set so if we want to do a ranch visit Texas is our best option. Our 5 week holiday begins in New York so we will definitely have packed for the cold weather, I had thought that texas would be a bit warmer and had definitely not thought of snow there so it is good to have this information. Thanks again
