Advice on 1st time road trip

We are travelling to Texas for 10 nights in mid March flying in and out of Houston from the UK and wanting to hire a car and travel around Texas. Looking to go to the Gulf Coast, Austin, San Antonio, not sure if worth travelling up to Dallas and Fort Worth or not. We are used to distance touring etc. Looking for advice on where to visit and for how long and hotels along the way. Many thanks

Austin and San Antonio are just 1.5 hours apart but very different vibes.

As indicated on a current thread...March 10-14 is spring break so you need to plan a Gulf Coast visit accordingly.... as well, the mega music festival SXSW will be going on around Austin....this case you'll need to plan on a few nights and SA I suppose

Austin..state capital, Bob Bullock Museum. LBJ library etc

San Antonio..Mexican culture, food, music is evident., the missions, the riverwalk, the Alamo etc.

If you're flying into/out of IAH, I suggest spending a day or two visiting our city as well, if for no other reason, to recover from your flight. Houston is largest city in Texas, 4th-largest in USA. If you're into museums, definitely see our museum district: http://moustonmuseumdistrict.org/ The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo will be going on; it's one of, if not THE, largest rodeos in the world: http://www.hlsr.com/ You could drive about 25 miles southeast to NASA Space Center: http://spacecenter.org/ There are so many other things to do, as well--just check Things to do.

As for food, Houston is home to a very diverse culture, and you can obtain food of almost any type cuisine here. Ordinarily I'd recommend Tex-Mex and BBQ, but since you're headed to San Antonio/Austin, get your Tex-Mex fill in San Antonio and your BBQ fix in either Lockhart on the way there or in Austin. Houston has many great restaurants, so let us know your taste and we can recommend some for you.

If you spend any time in Houston, it almost makes Dallas unnecessary. Fort Worth, however, has its own personality, and I'll leave the description of that city to people more familiar with it than I.

Welcome to Texas!

Many thanks for the info. We are thinking of staying around Houston for a couple of nights to get over jet lag etc. We are due to land mid afternoon and not sure whether to stay in a hotel near airport of head into the city for a night or 2? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Stay in downtown or the Galleria area for a two night stay. The hotels around the airport aren't near much of anything except the airport--you would have long drives to just about anywhere you wanted to go. If you stay downtown, you can use the light rail to access the Museum District or Hermann Park for the attractions there, and would be closer to Space Center Houston if that is on your list. Also better access to dining options. The Galleria would give you access to lots of shops and restaurants, and freeway access to get to the main attractions.

I would recommend Fort Worth. Check out The Stockyards National Historic District--Billy Bob's honky tonk, professional rodeo most weekends, the White Elephant saloon, the Stockyards hotel where the bar stools are topped by saddles. Also look at the Kimbell Art Museum, the Amon Carter Museum of Western Art, and the Water Gardens. You can also tour the nearby Bureau of Engraving and Printing, one of only two locations in the US where our paper currency is printed. A very manageable, enjoyable city to visit.

It all depends upon your interests which you don't state. Do you prefer outdoor activities, museums, theater, historical sites, music? Give us info on what you like to do.

our interests are mainly general sight seeing and taking in the local atmosphere etc. Want to try out the local food etc. Interested in museums, historical sights. Quite fancy looking or staying at a ranch but we dont ride so not sure if that would be a problem?

All Texas' major cities have first rate museums. One in particular might interest a Brit, the Dallas Museum of Art. The Reves Collection is a unique recreation of the interior of a South of France villa owned by Winston Churchill's publisher. Churchill stayed there and gave several of his paintings to Reves which are on display.

Here's a link to a list of the highlights of our cities. The triangle route can easily be done in your time frame. tripadvisor.com/GoListDetail-i21630-Texas_Tr…

I suggest you make the trip anti clockwise from Houston, going up to Dallas-Ft. Worth first. Dallas also has the JFK sites--Sixth Floor Museum and Dealey Plaza. Ft. Worth has the Stock Yards historic district and Sundance Square downtown.

Then I advise taking US280 south to San Antonio which is a much prettier drive than the interstate. Make a side trip to Fredericksburg if possible. The LBJ Ranch, home of Lyndon Johnson during his presidency, is between Johnson City and Fredericksburg. Several wineries are in this area called the Hill Country. Wildflowers will be starting to bloom which is the reason for going to DFW first, to give flowers more time.

Rockport-Port Aransas would be good to visit on the coast to avoid the Spring Break madness at South Padre Island.

Correction: the highway south to San Antonio is US281 rather than 280.
