Dead Horse Point State Park

We're going to be in the Moab area for 3 or 4 days in early May and want to see Dead Horse Point State Park while we're there. How long should we allow to visit the park? And what are the "must sees/must dos" there? (And just in case it affects any advice... we're also planning on visiting Arches and Canyonlands - Island in the Sky and Needles sections).

Dead Horse Point is a small detour on route 313, that you'll be taking to the northern, Island in the Sky section of Canyonlands from Moab.

You can make it a fairly quick stop if time is limited. The visitors center offers interesting information and then there's a short paved walk along the rim, looking down 2,000 ft into the Colorado River below.

Well worth a side trip.

When visiting the Needles District of Canyonlands make sure you stop at Newspaper Rock on Rt. 211.

The hiking is wide and varied in both Canyonlands and Arches depending on time, interest and ability. You can find lots of previously posted information on this forum that should be a good guideline.

Each of those parks is quite different and very amazing.

DHPSP might be our favorite park of them all near Moab. We spend a few hours there so we can hike the relatively level trail along the rim that offers awesome views down into Canyonlands.

Dead Horse Point can be as quick or long as you wish. It is a short detour on the way to the Island in the Sky district. If you just want a quick look and some photos, you could be done in less than 20 minutes. If you can get there for sunrise, it's amazing!

I have some pictures we took at sunrise there:

In between DHSP and Island in the Sky.....about a mile past the 313 turn off to DHSP you can take a dirt road (ONLY if you have a high clearance vehicle) and then about 3 miles you will reach Marlboro Point.

It's not the normal 'overlook' that everyone sees from DHSP. We were just there the other day after seeing a friends photo of a sunrise there the day before.
