Scenic Route 12 Question

We are driving from Bryce to Torrey on Route 12 - the scenic byway site suggests several side trips East Fork Sevier River Scenic Backway, Cottonwood Canyon Road Scenic Backway, Posey Lake / Pine Creek Scenic Backway, Hell’s Backbone Road Scenic Backway,

Hole-in-the-Rock Road Scenic Backway, Burr Trail Scenic Backway,

Notom Road Scenic Backway. Any recommendations given that we have the whole day to get from Bryce to Torrey?

thanks...

Avoid unpaved roads if you are in a rental vehicle. Check with locals for current road conditions.

Are you looking for scenic views from the car, or are you willing to do short walks or hikes?

Each of them certainly have their merits. I love Cottonwood Canyon to Grosvenor Arch and the Coxcomb. You can also take the Skutumpah road to Willis Creek.

I also recommend the Hole in the Rock road at least as far as Devil's Garden.

But as Red says they are dirt roads and you may need to stay on paved roads to keep your rental agreement intact.

The road to Kodachrome is paved. So is the Burr trail for the first part. It is worth taking the first 15 miles or so through Long canyon. (Well the whole thing is great, but again it is dirt through the park).

If you only have a day I think you could be fine just staying on the main road, taking the hikes at Escalante SP and Calf Creek, visiting the visitor centers at Cannonville and Escalante, stopping at Kiva Koffehouse, driving the Burr trail, and maybe the Anasazi Museum. There are a few trails on Boulder Mt as well.
