Re-Thinking March Trip; S. Utah vs Las Vegas

Airfare is done. Flyhing into Las Vegas on a Tuesday AM in early March; flying out on Friday PM (3 nights, but 4 full days).

Original plan was to drive to St. George on Day 1, explore Zion, then head back fo Vegas for 2 nights.

The more I look at info on Southern Utah, the more interesting it appears. Should we change and spend 2 nights in Utah, with just our final night in Vegas? We enjoy historic and scenic sights and also like to go to antique and thrift shops.

We have some Marriott points to use, so are thinking of staying at the Courtyard in St. George. Will there be enough to keep us interested for 2 full days in early March.

For sure I would opt for Southern Utah over Vegas. While I know you have points with Marriott, why not save them and actually stay in Springdale so you don't have to do the long commute each day. It will be a much better experience.

Have fun.

If you stay in Springdale there would be nicer scenery and its very close to Zion, but, I dont believe they have any Marriott brand Hotels.

But it is about a 50 min drive into Zion if you stay in St George.

The area the Marriott you mention is a good area though for visiting St George. Its located kind of up on a hill and a little out of the general traffic areas. Its also close driving distance to alot of the restaurants on S. River Road where alot are clustered together in that area.

Plenty to do also in the St George area with alot of Historic Buildings to take tours through ect.

Heres more info on top 10 things to do in St George which includes where the Historic Buildings are located.

So, you can easily take up 2 days in the area just in Zion or split your time a little and spend part in St George and part in Zion.

Spending a couple of days in Utah would be a good idea. You can choose to split two days between St George and Zion/Springdale, or stay in St George at a Marriott)seems to be three) and make a day trip to Zion NP.

Happytotrip has listed some links that will hopefully show you some of the historic places in St George.

Springdale is a fantastic small town to stay at outside of Zion NP. There is no Marriott chain hotels, but there are plenty of fantastic options, including Desert Pearl, Cable Mountain, Cliffrose, and Driftwood. Also in Springdale is a lot of shopping and galleries(selling mostly the touristy stuff) but might be worthwhile to take a look see, but probably not what you are looking for in terms of browsing. Here is a list of places in Springdale that may interest you if you choose to spend some time there.

In Zion Park is the history museum, as well as the visitor center if they are done their renos by the time you travel.

Vegas and So Utah are 2 completely diffeent experiences. Vegas is over-the-top hedonism, with lots of people, drinking, gambling, partying, lights, etc. It can be very exciting or very annoying, depending on what you are looking for. So Utah is more like what you said you are looking for.

The replies are very helpful!

Springdale is very appealing, however I think St. George will be far enough for us to drive after our morning flight to Las Vegas. We can explore St. George that afternoon, spend the night, then drive to Zion the morning of day 2. We will not be hiking due to physical limitations so I think we can see most areas of interest on that day. To limit the packing/unpacking it will probably be easiest to return to our St George hotel for a second night.

Having been to Las Vegas before, one night there will be adequate. We snapped up a really cheap airfare and now are trying to decide on itinerary.

Your plan to head to St George and stay two nights will work well. St George is a nice town and near enough to Zion for a quick visit. Be sure to see the History Museum and the view from the back of the Towers of the Virgin along with the main canyon stops. The free canyon shuttle will not be running so you'll be driving yourself in the canyon.
