National Park Trip

We are looking to take a National Parks trip to that area in July 2014. We are leaning toward visiting the Grand Canyon, Zion, Arches and Bryce. Does this seem like a good overview of the parks in that area? Would you recommend different? We will be traveling with kids ages 9 and 11. They like hiking and exploring the outdoors . Any specific suggestions? Any must do tours? We like to stay in condos or guest houses when possible or furnished cabins? Any suggestion in these areas: prefer to keep under $125 a night. How long would you plan to stay at each park.

This would be a fantastic trip. You'll see some of the most unique and amazing scenes on the planet. Charge your camera batteries. At minimum, I would plan on an overnight at the Grand Canyon, 2 full days in Zion, an overnighter in Bryce, and 3 days in Moab. I would also throw in a day in Torrey/ Capitol Reef on the way from Bryce to Arches. That is at least 8 nights total. You could easily add a day to each place. Moab/Arches will have the most diverse set of amenities and things to do. Although Zion/Springdale is a close runner up. How much time will you have overall? and What is your point of entry? It would help with an itinerary.

Considering point of entry, Moab and Capitol Reef are closest to Salt Lake City. While GC, Zion are closer to Las Vegas. Bryce is equal time from both Vegas and Salt Lake. This trip would require driving for a couple of hours in between destinations. If you arrive and depart from the same airport, you would be driving between 7-8 hours on the front or back end of of the trip. If you arrive in Vegas and depart from Salt Lake, you would incur rental car drop fees. Just something to think about. Or you could bypass one of the oulier areas, which would be Moab if you fly in to Vegas or GC if you fly into Salt Lake.

I would think about doing a Jeep Safari in Moab and a rafting trip on the Colorado River. Hike Delicate Arch at sunset and take a guided tour in the Fiery Furnace. Spend a day at Canyonlands, right outside of Moab. Hike the Narrows and climb Angel's Landing, if they are not afraid of heights. Maybe a burro or ATV tour at Bryce Canyon. Check into a ranger lead astronomy program at Bryce. Watch the sun rise at Bryce and the cliffs light up in brilliant colors. There are also places to check out in between these areas like an easy slot canyon like Willis Canyon or Little Wild Horse, Goblin Valley, etc.

Be prepared for heat. You will be arriving in the desert in summer. Drinks lots of water. And more water. And more. Use sunscreen. Plan hikes for early morning. Take a break in the heat and go back out in the evening. Bryce will have a more mild temperature because it is at a higher elevation. Do activities with water when possible like rafting or the Narrows.

I just saw your newer post. i would fly into SLC for the parks mentioned, it is 2-3 hours closer to all of them except for the GC. Two weeks would be a good amount of time to experience the area.

We will fly into either Pheonix or Salt Lake City depending on price. We plan on about 2 weeks there, but can be flexible.
