From Palm Springs take hwy 62 to Joshua Tree. Enter Joshua Tree National Park from the west at the town of JT.Drive the north loop and exit at 29 Palms on Utah Trail Street. Utah Trail hits Amboy Road.

Take Amboy Road to Amboy to see Roys on Route 66. Take R-66 to Kelbaker Road and cut thru the Mojave Preserve. Stop at the dunes and the depot/meseum/park headquarters. Take Kelso Cima Road to Cima, then Cima Road to I-15. Along this route is the largest concentration of Joshua Trees in the world. Stop at the picnic area at Mojave Cross. Across the road is the trail to Teutonia Peak.

Trip from Palm Springs to Escalante in October pics.

Between Vegas and UT is Valley of Fire state park.

Head up I-15 to Zion. In April the shuttes are running.

From Zion, head to Bryce. Along the way see Red Canyon. Take Hwy 12 from Bryce thru Escalante to Torrey to see Capitol Reef. Nice places to see all along Hwy 12.

Good places to stop and eat too. Kiva Koffeehouse, Hells Backbone Grill, Burr Trail Grill, Cafe Diablo...

From Torrey head on up to SLC..

From SLC to Calgary is still another two days of travel, depending on your style of driving of course. April may be still a little early for Yellowstone, but West Yellowstone should be OK if you want to add that to your plan. With the amount of precipitation and snow going through Montana in the past few months, it may be a good idea to keep an eye on the weather in April. I am sure the folks on the Wyoming forum can give you good ideas for an April scenic trip.

From SLC, there is the option to travel to Jackson, WY via Logan, Bear Lake, and US89, which is very scenic.

As mentioned by Dez, Zion/Springdale is a very worthy park to make an overnight stop. Bryce is another must see, as you are in the general area if you visit Zion. Not sure if you want to swing over to Capitol Reef with the time frame you have, but that is an option.
