Bennington or Brattleboro?

Hi Folks:

I am thinking of taking a weekend trip up from Boston to southern VT. Only plan on staying over Saturday night for a quick getaway. Looking for some scenic foliage drives, antique marts, wineries, etc. I don't want to do too much driving since we will have limited time. Am trying to decide upon staying in Brattleboro and touring towns around there or Bennington since I have heard good things about there, but that seems to be about an hour of additional driving.

Is Bennington worth the extra drive or will I get similar activities in the Brattleboro area? Any recommendations on must see towns/places? I am generally unfamiliar with VT.

Many thanks!

What weekend are you thinking of? Rooms for Sat nights are almost extinct. You could visit both towns, they are not that far apart and each offers different things plus the drive over Hogback Mt is truly beautiful.

Yes see both towns. Stay somewhere on VT Route 9, say in Wilmington. There is a really great winery in Jacksonville,VT, the North River Winery, they having tasting rooms in Bennington. The views on the drive over Route 9 are priceless.

Brattleboro likely has a little bit more to offer for shopping and the like, and very unique local flavor. Still, it's only 40 miles between the two towns, and as others have suggested here, the drive on Rt. 9 over Hogback Mountain is indeed priceless. You can do both, truly.

Be sure to see the Latchis Theater in Brattleboro, one of the great Art Deco treasures to be found anywhere in New England.

Thanks for the input from all. Problem solved....the hotel chain I was going to book with in Bennington is sold out, so we will book in Brattleboro, drive up there on Sat and tour that area, stay overnight and be fresh to drive on to Bennington in the morning. Aprreciate the feedback. Now...try to get those leaves at peak for this weekend. :-)
