Need some ideas--Northwest Kingdom

My husband and I are flying into Burlington on Oct. 4 and spending 3 nights at Tabor House Inn on Lake Champlain in Swanton. Do you have any ideas for best places to drive to see colorful leaves and scenery and best places to eat?

Hi there....jst want to clarify. There is no "northwest kingdom". There is a "northeast kingdom", but it's nowhere near where you will be staying ;)

I was just up in Swanton yesterday and the leaves were just starting to change (the area right along the lake is always the last to see the change in VT). Next weekend probably will not be at peak but you can take some short drives to see some good color. Get yourself a good map of Vermont that shows back roads. Take some drives east into the Green Mountains. If you bring your passports and/or your birth certificates, you could take a jaunt up to Montreal, a little less than an hour from Swanton. Not much foliage up there (the terrain pretty flat and wide open) but its a fun city.

For restaurants, in St. Albans there is a place called "Jeff's" that is really good. I also like Mimo's Pizza in St. Albans.

Have fun!!

The Champlain Islands will be pretty, although color won't be peak then. You are going to be about 5 days too early for the South Hero Applefest, unfortunately.

Dinner at the North Hero House would be an excellent choice....though at this time of year, reservations will be mandatory.

I've never had good luck at Jeff's Maine Seafood in St. Albans, my dishes generally have been substandard, but it is a very popular local restaurant, and who knows, maybe I've just been unlucky. Just down the street is what I think is a better choice, Chow Bella.
